The Bachelorette: Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Douche-Bags
Recap and Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Romantic Rose
June 30, 2009
The latest episode of The Bachelorette left us all with one question for Jillian: Why? No, not why did she keep lying douche-bag legend-in-his-own-mind Wes. But why did she boot a bachelor who could hook her up with free wine for life, when she seems to live on the stuff?

Footage of the hometown visits was cut short to allow time for the Wes vs. Jake showdown and the surprise return of Ed, or at least surprise to those who haven't been following the web forums or picking up on the many references to Ed that Chris and Jillian have made.

First visit: You've Got a Friend:
Could Reid be any more adorable? Sorry, had to get my Chandler reference out there. His family seemed quite normal and eerily cheerful about their chosen profession, real estate. Either they know something I don't, or they're living in denial, which would make Reid the perfect match for Jillian. They have a cute surprise birthday party for Reid, which is just the sort of thing the Friends would do for Chandler after he made several sarcastic remarks about his birthday that Joey wouldn't get. No fondue or meat dipping is involved, so everyone seems to enjoy it.

A New York Minute:
Jillian's next adventure is in New York, where she discovers Michael is half of the male equivalent of the Olsen twins in their cute, tween adventuring stage, not their grungy, we're-too-good-for-conventional-grooming years. He and his brother Steve try to switch places, but Jilly is far quicker than Dennis Quaid or Emma Thompson, perhaps because Michael's British accent is not up to the level of Lindsay Lohan's. His sister Jenna makes a surprise visit from Australia. Looks like surprise visits are the theme of the night. The family seems nice and normal, and I can totally see Michael bringing home Marcia Brady as his new groovy chick, after her nose heals from that football injury, of course.

Top Chef San Diego:
Kiptyn's family is not ready to let the hot tub jokes die. The caution tape around the hot tub is a subtle homage to the scene many consider the highlight of Jillian's season on The Bachelor. Nothing welcomes a girl to the family like reminding her of when she publicly made out with another guy, only to be publicly dumped by that same guy.

The house is nice, the "after" on a home-improvement show nice. After Friends and The Brady Bunch, Jillian then finds herself faced with a Top Chef challenge as Kiptyn's mother, for some unknown reason, decides that the hot tub caution tape is not welcome enough and that Jillian must identify which lasagna and wine are the good ones. We have a version of this at my house too, where hubby and I get the Stouffer's and Coke, while the kids get Freezer Queen and Sam's Choice. But someday their little palates will mature, and they too will be ready for the good stuff.

Valley of the Dorks:
After a too-fun-for-words ride on a tractor, Jesse and Jillian immediately click, as evident from deep conversations, such as:

Jillian: What are you thinking?
Jesse: A lot of things.

This reminds me of.....
