The Bachelorette: Riding Off Into The Twilight With Her Vampire Nerd
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Romantic Rose
July 30, 2009
In the last episode of The Bachelorette, Jillian made her final selection. As the show opened, Jillian tells us that there could be a proposal. Could be, if the beautiful island of Hawaii, sneaky producers expert at manipulating the outcome they want, and an anxious thirty-year-old with diamond fever, have anything to say about it. Jillian says she's had an incredible journey. She slayed dragons. Take that, you critics who say the show isn't feminist! Jillian slays her own dragons. Armed with nothing but a quirky hot dog theory. a Canadian accent, and an affinity for strapless evening and daywear, she conquers all the obstacles between her and whichever incredible guy she chooses.

The first incredible guy is Ed. He's wearing a pink shirt, unbuttoned half-way to show his chest hair. He's following the same strategy of many a past bachelorette: when in doubt, show cleavage. At least he's not wearing the green and white swimsuit to meet Jillian's parents.

Jillian's mom Peggy grills him with tough questions such as, does he want kids? He says honesty and love are the keys to a good relationship. He very wisely omits mention of the Fantasy Suite. Her family seems impressed, and he wins her father over by sort of asking for his permission to ask Jillian to marry him, which automatically scores him 500 Brownie points. It may be archaic, but dads seem to love that sort of thing. Her dad says he'll do somersaults. Dad, that sounded a little too eager (or desperate). Chill oot, okay?

The visit ends after a scene in which the entire group, wearing hula skirts and coconut bras over their street clothes, attempt to hula in a way which makes Kiptyn's flamenco dancing look semi-professional. I have to admit it looked like they were having fun, though. The main surprise was how subdued Jillian's grandmother was, although she did comment on how attractive Ed was. Jillian says when she left with Ed, she felt like he was her fiance. Not good for Kiptyn.

Bachelor number 2 also impresses the family. Jillian's grandmother thinks he's very very very very nice. He reveals that he works to live, not lives to work, and her family also seems very comfortable with him. He's less committed in his talk with Jillian's father. Instead of saying he's in love with Jillian, he hedges: "I'm getting there."

In her talk with her cousin after both visits, Jillian says the decision is tough. She wants a lightning bolt from God to strike her. She settles for a volcano erupting, but more about that later.

Ed shows up for his final date with his hair combed down in bangs, which I hate, and a pink shirt over a green tank. I know fashion is not the point of this show, but come on, dude, you're competing against Kiptyn! What's next, the green shorts?

They hop in a helicopter, apparently not the one with the minister, and take a scenic tour. Lush greenery, colorful flowers, dramatic volcanoes, waterfalls. Standard Hawaii stuff, if you like that sort of thing. They picnic by the waterfall, and Ed tells Jillian she could be one of his best guy friends, exactly what every woman wants to hear when she's on a romantic date in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. Although he does quickly add she's also the person he wants to spend the rest of her life with.

Then they swim.....
