The Bachelorette: One Quits, Two Go Home Roseless
Recap and Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Gayl Killough

The Bachelorette is down to a crazy eight, or eight bachelors left. Canadian Jillian Harris has been on her home turf for the last few episodes. For last night’s episode, the entire time was spent on a train showing the bachelors the Canadian wilderness. I much prefer this to the mansion scenery of previous seasons at this stage of the competition, so I have to give this show props for some very beautiful scenery. On a shallow note, the guys are always nice to look at too.
I started this episode with the baggage of previous episodes before watching the first minute. The Bachelorette is one of those reality shows that my opinions evolve over time. I also have to confess that I was feeling very close to Ed last week when his work interfered with his time on the show and Ed felt that he had to leave. Unlike Ed, all I needed to do was simply watch the show last week and write about it, but I confess that despite my best intentions, my mind was not focused on the episode. I had a problem last week whenI was required to be in two different places at the same time (the laws of physics do not actually allow this) for work, I was doing everything I could to compensate, and so ironically while Ed was talking about work in last week’s episode, I was distracted by thinking about work myself.
I re-watched last week’s episode over this past weekend when I was not rushing. It is amazing how being a little more relaxed and paying more attention will do for an episode. Jesse had a wonderful date with Jillian that completely underwhelmed me the first time I watched the episode. I should have realized that Jesse was emerging as a potential contender. How weird would it be if a guy named Jesse won the Bachelorette for two seasons in a row? I still have doubts for some reason that Jesse will win, but Jesse did make himself a serious contender and Jesse has been building up the entire season.
I think the other reason that I underestimated Jesse was that I get so caught up in trying to outsmart the editing on the show that I forget to simply watch the show sometimes. I already have Reid as my under the radar pick for the finale, so I really wasn’t expecting the possibility of another contestant flying under the radar to the finale. Also, since a different Jesse last season got the under the radar editing until he won, I wasn’t expecting a guy named Jesse this year to get the same treatment. Since a guy named Jesse won the last season, I am not expecting this Jesse to win, even though there is nothing that precludes a guy with the same name from winning in different seasons. Now that I read this on paper, that was a silly assumption on my part.
Similar to the format of previous episodes, there will be one group date, and two individual dates. The first guy to get a date is Robby and the date will take place in a different part of the train while the train is moving. Robby is a guy that Jillian is unsure about, so I am not sure if this individual date is a good thing or not for Robby. At this point though, Robby needs some alone time with Jillian.
