The Biggest Loser: A Marathon Is Not The Longest Race, Life Is
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Kathleen

First, a shout out to Dina ... eliminated player runs a half-marathon with the leading contender and doesn't even break a sweat. Wow.

Sporting events that take place in the wide open spaces rather than on a confined playing field are, well, pretty darned boring for a spectator. Any other parents of cross-country runners out there?

Thus, I anticipated that this week's Biggest Loser show was going to be a chore to watch.

We would have endless flashback photos and tearful confessionals about "how far I've come" and at least a bushel of product placements all leading up to watching the pain and sweat of people who are not really fit enough to run a marathon, run a marathon.

The weigh in, which is why we were all watching, takes a whole 10 minutes of air time even if they drag it out endlessly.

Wrong ... yes, we got all that, but they surprised me.

We got some real insights into the business of weight. Why people get heavy and what they have to do to change.

Going out on a limb here, I'm going to say that most of us ... you, me and the person sitting next to you ... have an issue somewhere inside us that causes us to do things that are not good for us.

We all have things which we feel which are anywhere from a fleeting unhappiness to a chronic depth-of-your-soul pain. Those things need a bandage if we are to carry on with our lives for one more minute.

As amateurs in the world of psychology we treat our pain with whatever is handy and has proven to make us feel better or happier or less painful.

For the fortunate many, what it takes is a "walk to clear my head" or a "sit down with a cup of tea".

For others, the band-aid or drug of choice is actually drugs, or nicotine (also a drug, I know), or alcohol (also a drug, I again know). For many of us in the middle group, however, the addictive behavior is legal, readily available, and ultimately just as destructive. It's the abuse of food.

So, what's your food-drug? Nachos? chocolate chip cookie and milk? Cinnabon? steak and loaded baked potato? the all you can eat buffet? Come on. Fess up. You have one.

Why, if you have a food issue do you not weigh 400 pounds? Because you have figured out at your stage of life how to deal with it and how to fit it into your life. You have set limits for yourself and you are in control. And bless your hearts, this includes those of you who suffer from the yoyo 15. Your clothes get tight, you do something about it and it comes off. It's not a perfect way to deal with it, but you are dealing with it and applause for you.

Now there are the rest of us and our four biggest losers and poor Eric who was interviewed last week. They are living proof that you have to know why you are so big. It's not enough to want to be thinner and have all the good reasons in the world why you must be thinner. All these people have the mantra down pat on that one.

The why, however .....
