The Biggest Loser: From Hopeless to Hopeful
Commentary and Recap By RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery
November 25, 2009

Now down to 220.
This week on the Biggest Loser, we got to hear the contestants’ sob stories – again and again and again.

And Amanda mentioned that she’d been “America’s Choice” for the one millionth time. Honestly: she seems like a nice enough girl, and she’s sure looking much fitter and prettier, but I for one would be glad if we never had to be reminded again.

The episode began with the group sadly emerging from the elimination room and returning to the kitchen. Amanda realized she’d lost the one person she’d known she could count on, and she had no one on her side. “It’s only me, here,” she cried.

We got a quick rerun of last week’s elimination, where Rudy told Rebecca he didn’t trust her and then cast the deciding vote, to send her home.

Liz knew Rebecca had been “fierce competition. But, Danny, Rudy, Allen and I have been part of an alliance since the beginning. We’ve stayed true to our plan about who to vote for, and we’re still here.”

One of the guys asked Amanda how she was feeling. “I’m still here,” she stated. “So, I have to focus on myself.” She figured that, if she goes below the yellow line this week, she’d surely go home. “I want to be at the finale; I want to make it there. It would be good to end the competition where I began it.”

Rudy smiled and told Amanda “America made a good choice.”

Allen reminded everyone that they had a week’s worth of work ahead of them - and they would then face another weigh-in. He also reminded them all of them were going home, after this week on campus; only the final four would return to the Ranch, before the finale.

Danny realized he had another week, to focus only on his weight loss. He said he also wants to make it to the finale, so he knew this week’s results would be crucial.

Rudy remarked that one of the five people in that room would be the Biggest Loser.

Bob and Jillian joined them, and weren’t surprised to see Rebecca missing. Bob figured she had a chance to be the winner. The trainers asked how the vote had gone; Rudy readily shared his reasoning to vote for Rebecca.

He again related his opinion that, while the teams were divided into Blue and Black, Rebecca had “played both sides.” Jillian didn’t buy it; she figured Rudy had done it because Rebecca constituted a threat. “If that is the reason, say it!” Jillian admonished Rudy.

Rudy wouldn’t budge from what he’d said. “If that was the reason, I’d say it. I can win with Rebecca or without her.”

Jillian insisted Rudy had had other reasons; he disagreed.

Bob moved on with the trainers’ message for the week: “There is just one week left, here. This week, you need to remember how you felt when you sat on your couch and decided to come here. You wanted your life back and you’re almost there. Among the five of you is the final four – so, let’s go to the gym.”

Jillian agreed. “It’s the last week. Think of your accomplishments.” Allen knew he’d had many at the Ranch, and wanted to keep going. Jillian told him: “You win every day when you excel at what you do. Let power and strength reign in you.” Sounds very New Age and means absolutely nothing, but Allen kept working out.

For this workout, the trainers decided to let the contestants see what they had all balked at, during their initial Ranch workouts. When Bob gave Rudy the weight he’d struggled with on the first week, he laughed. He found it very easy to handle. When Bob gave him back the weights he was now dealing with, he commented that he “woulda puked for sure” if he’d even tried to lift the heavier weight on the first week.

Danny lifted barbells and remembered that, on week one, his belly was so big the barbells scraped it on the way up and down. “I feel pretty good, now,” he told the trainers. “I can run a 5K without thinking about it. My goal is to take control of my body, like I used to.”

Allen had a band around him and was pulling Jillian across the floor. He remembered struggling with this same task, week one; now, it was not that difficult.

Liz knew there was a big difference between day one and the present. She remembered falling with her first work-out. “When I began, on a scale of 1 to 10 I was a minus five; now, I’m a 9. At the finale, I’ll be a 10.”

The contestants were sitting in the kitchen, when they were joined by hostess Allison Sweeney. She told them they’d learned a lot, but they were all soon going home. “When you get home, you’ll not only have to eat right, you’ll have to handle jobs and families. What you will need is balance, especially with your finances.” She then introduced the week’s first guest: financial expert, Suze Orman.

Allen was excited. “She knows all about finances,” he said.

Allison was quick to jump in and explain the next part of the show would be sponsored by Total Cereal.

Suze told the contestants they needed to remember that “wealth is a part of health.” She encouraged them all to be strong and keep their weight off. “Obesity is expensive,” she reminded them. “Obese people pay $500-1000 more for life insurance.” Allen knew this was true, for him. Suze told him to call his insurance company, when he gets home, to tell them to lower his rates – since he is now more fit.

Suze asked Rudy how often.....
