The Biggest Loser: Facing Off and Facing Up
Commentary and Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery

This week on the Biggest Loser, the existing alliances became even more important – and the result was yet another contestant who resigned the game in favor of their teammates.
As selfless as that is, it seems as though this is happening more this year; than ever before.
I have to wonder why that is. Why did Sean, Antoine, Mo and Abby feel the need to go home, in favor of the other contestants? And why is this more of a trend, in this particular season?
As in previous episodes, we got to know each of the contestants a bit more, this week – at least in terms of what we were shown, by the producers. We saw the Blue Team search the returning Black team to find out who had been sent home, last week – and to look with disdain at those they assumed had targeted Dina for elimination.
The fact that they were right didn’t win them any popularity contests with the Black team. In fact, it set up a rivalry that built on the one that was already there.
Except for Liz’ unwavering loyalty to her Danny, and for Allen’s apparently sanguine impartiality, I think it’s safe to say the Blue and Black teams are now at odds. I don’t know how it speaks for what the atmosphere will be like when the contestants compete as singles (which is sure to come up within a few weeks, unless or until they inevitably invite one or more of the at-home contestants back into the game) but for this week, it made for a wonderfully competitive episode.
The face-off episode is a fun concept. In theory, you only have to beat one person – or DO you? If you, like Danny, beat your designated opponent, but the rest of your team falls short, what good does it do – except for you, because you’re immune?
So, this week, we had many face-offs that pit some contestants against each other and made for even more extreme rivalries than had already been created, by the formation of the two teams.
Could there be any doubt of who would win a Rebecca – Amanda face-off? I think not. Rebecca has almost always bested her shrinking violet of a teammate. Amanda has been fortunate in her journey on the Ranch: first, she became “America’s choice” (and, at this point, no one remembers WHY they voted for her instead of Blonde #2). But, now, she has so far lucked out in her alliance with Daniel and Shay.
As for Rebecca, in addition to her proven record of weight loss, which has kept her in the top five for every week this season, she has become more and more of a competitive machine. In fact, she is beginning to channel Tara in ability – though she is a bit more self-congratulatory about it. Rebecca has the potential and drive to be a formidable athlete, if she keeps at her winning ways.
The Allen versus Danny contest was probably a mistake on the Blue team’s part – although maybe they knew no one was going to beat Danny, this week, and they didn’t want to waste their powerhouse, Rudy, on a futile contest. Allen has been steady but impressive. I love Allen’s neutrality and his fairness. He’s already a good athlete; his continued weight loss will make him a better fireman and an even better-looking guy, but he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. So, his “loss” to the outspoken and entertaining Danny didn’t diminish him as much as it might have briefly diminished the halo of another contestant.
Rudy chose Shay wisely, but poor Shay felt the futility of the contest before she even stepped on the scale. Shay is doing as well as can be expected. For a woman to lose 75 pounds in seven weeks is remarkable. If she had begun even 100 pounds lighter, she would be at the top of this group. But Shay came to the show with 476 pounds of emotional baggage, and, as her weight goes, she becomes more and more aware of why that weight was there. Although Rudy won the weigh-in and broke his record, shay (for all her excess talking) has become a real victor in her own life.
I think Liz’s beating Daniel was a.....
