The Biggest Loser: Sporting New Looks And Reaching New Heights
Commentary and Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery

This week on the Biggest Loser, we heard some inspiring speeches from the made-over contestants.
And, yet again, learned some things from Rudy that he’s managed to conceal from everyone –especially the people it affected the most.
I have been a big Rudy fan from the beginning. He seemed like a genial, positive contestant who worked hard for his #1 spot and who has been generally well-liked.
And, then, last week, he ticked off Shay with his “broken promise” during the hoop challenge – and paid her back with some ambiguous words about reaching goals, at last week’s elimination. Last week, I was on his side enough to give him the benefit of the doubt, about his words to Shay, at the hoop challenge. Shay did survive until the end of the challenge, before succumbing to the combined efforts of Danny and Rudy. She called this a broken promise; he didn’t. In the end, the angry words they exchange didn’t SEEM to be the cause of Rudy’s vote against Shay, but it was difficult to tell. His words surely were a surprise to Shay. I don’t think she would have been surprised to hear Rudy was still upset from the challenge; his words about the contest being “all about having goals” being his motivation for her ouster upset her because, in the context which they were said, made no sense.
I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, last week. But after this week, I am less willing. His words to Rebecca seemed out of the blue; he doesn’t trust her because of something she’d allegedly done or said, back when the teams were divided? And he told her this … when?
We know from last week that Rudy has no problem speaking his mind when he’s upset with someone. He may speak in terse, measured tones, but we know he can do it. So, why not tell Rebecca you had a problem with whatever she was doing, back when she did it? Or… was that REALLY your motivation for sending her home? Or, was it the older/younger alliance again, but you just couldn’t bring yourself to mention it?
Rudy has been a powerhouse. His amazing weight loss is admittedly admirable and no one can chalk up his challenge wins to anyone but him. He deserves kudos for what he’s done. But I’m less enthusiastic about him winning the big prize, even though it looks like that’s a very good possibility.
But we who watch this game on a regular basis know: anything can happen. I’ve read spoilers about who the final four will be, so I am pretty sure I know who goes home next week (email me if you really want to know) – even though I can’t figure out why or how that person gets voted off. So, based on what I know, it would be safe to predict that one of the big guys will probably win this game.
But, we can’t count Liz or Amanda out. Especially after last year. And the year before that. And the year before that; when three relatively small women have bested all the men. Will a woman win, this year? I don’t know.
CAN a woman win? Maybe.
I do have a favorite.....
