The Biggest Loser: The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Kathleen

The wrong stuff.
On the Biggest Loser last night we had a bad case of “the more things change the more they stay the same”. Then it all got confusing.
First, I’d like to commend whomever has been put in charge of product placements. Things are much improved. While the products are still being placed, the whole deal is much less contrived. Good? No. Better? Yes.
Back on the ranch, everyone got shipped home for their now customary at home week. We have learned what to expect from our end of the couch.
The challenge of home cooking at Sam’s house was pitiful. Excuse me? Was that scripted or what?
Mom, who looks to be in pretty fair shape, is whipping up batches from the list of the Top Ten Things You Shouldn’t Eat for Breakfast and is looking happy about it. So when Sam objects, they just slide it all back in the refrigerator? I could just visualize Jillian bursting through the door like a Tasmanian Devil and throwing it all in the trash. And what mom on the planet who thinks she’s cooking her kid’s favorite food is going to gently stop and say “ok. We’ll just go grocery shopping instead”?
Scripted. And not too well, either.
The challenge of eating out in Ashley’s family was sad. Really, it was sad. Sure Ashley followed the script and ordered well off the menu and properly bemoaned what she used to order and eat, but her family? OMG. That whole family sat down, ordered and ate a 3 course version of Death on a Plate and didn’t bat an eye. And Sherry did it with them.
That was one of my confusions … the at home contestants who appeared on screen.
Sherry ate all the wrong stuff at the restaurant. She appeared to have not learned a thing at the Ranch or shared it with her other daughters. Those girls may have the metabolism of hummingbirds if they eat like that regularly, but no matter what they are doing their arteries no favors.
And the transformation moment that they showed back when Sherry was eliminated, is obviously still some time in the future.
We have all been around people who have recently become converts to a new way to eat (or think, or exercise or live). They share, and share, and over share. No one in their immediate orbit can escape the information. So for Sherry to blithely chow down on super-stuffed-double-topped cheesy baked potatoes with her daughters while Ashley ate my personal favorite of Ahi and steamed spinach, was weird.
Scripted. It had to be scripted. We saw Sherry’s transformation pictures. Nothing but scripted makes sense.
Patti is clearly not going to.....
