The Biggest Loser: An Episode of Olympian Proportions
Commentary and Recap By RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery

Doesn't understand what
she's doing wrong.
This week on the Biggest Loser, the contestants met some world-class athletes, and got a taste of what it means to be an Olympian.

The episode began with a review of what had happened last week. It wasn’t clear why they had to review it so thoroughly, but they did. Brown’s John had gone home without deliberation, and Grey’s Koli was very upset by his departure.

Koli was troubled by the sense that John “deserved to be here” more than he did. “He’s a better man than I am,” Koli said, of John.

But Koli was still part of the group, and he was surprised along with everyone else when hostess Allison Sweeney told them they were going on a field trip to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. “You will eat, sleep, work out, and train with Olympic athletes,” Allison told them. “Let the games begin!”

Michael was thrilled. He thought of his life, just six weeks ago, as a “couch potato”; now he’d be going to the Olympic Training Center. “I never dreamed this would happen to me,” he mused.

Melissa called it the opportunity of a lifetime. “The athletes there have done amazing things, and we will get to meet them!”

Allison told them all to pack for the trip; they would leave in the morning. When they arrived, all were awestruck by the immensity of the place. There were amazing sculptures of athletes around the buildings. Everyone looked at the statues and wondered if their own bodies would ever be so sculpted.

Allison greeted them, and delivered some very startling news: they were now going to play as individuals!

Melissa (who seemed to think she had the only interesting things to say to the camera, this week) said that playing as individuals would be different for her and Lance, since they were married. “We will help each other through this process, no matter what,” she said. And, this is different than the other teams… how?

Allison continued with the even more startling news that two people would be eliminated, this week; there would be two “lines” at the weigh-in. Just as had happened last week, the person with the lowest percentage of weight loss would be “under the red line” and be immediately eliminated. The two people with the next lowest percentages would be “under the yellow line” – and one of them would also go home.

So much for a happy vacation; the threat of that red line was in everyone’s mind.

Sunshine was especially upset by the prospect of the red line. Being eliminated without a vote was what had happened to her and O’Neal, on the first week. “I’ve been in that position and I don’t wanna go back there,” she said.

The first person the gang met was Alison, a Paralympic skier. She was born with a missing leg, and her mother helped her find out she could ski by “throwing her” down a snowy hill. Jillian thought meeting these athletes was a great opportunity for the contestants; “they can see people who have dedicated their lives to a sport. This will inspire them.” Alison led the group down a hill, and they watched as she lit the Olympic torch.

Seeing the torch was an inspiring moment for everyone. Melissa described seeing it as “seeing the spirit of why we’re here. We are here to change our lives, but the people here do that every day.”

O’Neal was also excited by the torch. “That torch was lit for the whole USA,” he said. He also said he was ready to see what the week would bring.

Lance was also touched by the sight, but also saw the humor in the contestants being at the OTC. “Being fat got me to the Olympics!” he laughed.

When the contestants got to their rooms, they found an autographed flag. It had been signed by all the athletes at the center. Everyone was excited and amazed by this.

O’Neal was humbled by the sight of the flag. “We will never pass this way again,” he told Sunshine, and they hugged.

After getting the flags.....
