Moving forward.
This week on the Biggest Loser, the Black team tried desperately to recover from their losing streak, and many of the contestants met and exceeded their personal goals.
The episode began with some ominous music; to remind us of Cheryl’s elimination, last week. Daris – who was worried about his mother’s fate, and Koli – concerned for his cousin, were clasping hands in solidarity.
Daris said, “I hope my Mom will still be here.” When Sherry came out of the elimination room alone, he realized she’d probably been ousted. When the rest of the team emerged, with solemn faces, he knew the truth. “I’m really sad,” he revealed, “but I am going to keep quiet, so I don’t cry.”
Stephanie tried to make him feel better. “We were all lucky to have your Mom on our team.”
Daris didn’t want to reveal his emotions to everyone, and said he had to go to his room and be alone. “She was always there, for me. I’m by myself, now. ”
Morning came, and the contestants filed into the gym – but hostess Allison Sweeney was waiting for them. At the center of the gym were podiums with buzzers. Koli dreaded the implications: they were having a trivia event. “It’s not physical, so I won’t be good at it,” he admitted.
Allison reminded them that, to change their bodies, they must change their minds. They needed knowledge of food, in order to make the right choices.
She went on to explain their morning challenge would test their knowledge of food. The information would be taken from the Biggest Loser book (“A handy tool to help people meet their weight loss goals”, says the product placement.) If a contestant gave the right answer, their team would get a point. If they got it wrong, the other team would have a chance to get the point. The first team to get three points would win. The prize: a night away, at the Four Seasons Spa and luxury resort.
Ashley really wanted the spa treatment. “This means everything,” she cried. “I’ve been working hard and puking like crazy. I want to feel like a girl.”
Allison wasn’t finished with her announcement. “The spa is a good reason to want to win this challenge,” she told them. “But, there’s also a reason not to lose: the losing team gets to clean the kitchen and the gym.”
Sherry didn’t want that fate. “I am not here to be anyone’s Mom; I hate picking up for myself, so I don’t want to do it for others.”
O’Neal definitely didn’t want to clean. “I left at least 80 pounds of sweat, in that gym. I don’t want to be the one to mop it up.”
The first round featured Ashley, against Daris. Allison asked how much more fiber brown rice has; as compared to white rice. Ashley guessed 5 times; that was wrong. Daris was correct: brown rice has 3.5 times more fiber than white rice.
The next question pitted Andrea against Koli; it was a question about omega 3 fatty acids, and Andrea guessed wrong. Koli was able to guess correctly, and the Blue team got another point.
Sam and Lance faced off, for a question about a substance that promotes wound healing. Lance didn’t even know how to pronounce it, but guessed it was in pomegranates. That was wrong, and Sam successfully guessed it was found in strawberries – and the Black team was on the board.
The “elder statesmen” of the game – Sherry and O’Neal, were next up at the podiums. Allison talked about steel-cut oats, which help lower your blood pressure. She asked which other grain was also able to do so; O’Neal incorrectly guessed flax. Sherry guessed it was a trick question, and said no other grain could do this. That was the correct answer, and the teams were tied.
To break the tie, Michael was up, with Stephanie. Allison asked how many calories was in one ounce of avocado. Michael correctly guessed 50 – and the Blue team had won another challenge! All the Blues were excited to go to the spa. “Thank God we’re not the Black team,” someone said.
Ashley was pissed, on behalf of her teammates. “We lost – so now we have to clean.”
Lance was exuberant. “We’re goin’ to the spa. We don’t just have the strength to win challenges, we have the brains, too.”
When they arrived at the hotel, everyone.....
