Biggest Loser Couples: A Wake-Up Call, For One And All
Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery

This week on the Biggest Loser, the show’s doctor delivered some medical wake-up calls to the contestants, and everyone sat up and paid attention.

As a cynic and as one who’s watched the show before, I can only hope it will result in lasting changes for all of them.

I expected the smaller numbers of this week’s weigh-in, and, while there were some surprises at the weigh in, it didn’t go much differently than past seasons’ week two had gone.

Let’s face it: it’s a physiological fact that, when the body suddenly drops a large amount of weight, as most of the contestants’ bodies had done, on the first week, it activates its own defense mechanisms and reacts by slowing down weight loss. When this happens, your body thinks you are starving – because that’s what it seems like, to your confused metabolism.

Thus: the week two curse.

These contestants didn’t do all that badly, this week. Melissa gained weight, but she did it on purpose. She may not have meant to actually gain weight, but she admittedly slacked off; to take advantage of the Red Team’s immunity.

And good for her; for admitting to it – although it took Bob’s statement of disbelief, to get her to admit her strategy.

At this point, all of them have only just begun to get used to life on the Ranch. They’ve barely checked in; none of them are “ready” – physically or emotionally – to go home, so soon. Also at this point, the big money prize they’re all hoping for is probably NOT the utmost motivation in their mind. Sure: they all WANT it. But, at this point, with 16 people remaining to beat for that prize, they have a lot of survival and many more challenges to face before that prize begins to seem like a real possibility. For most of them, they are just trying to survive from week to week – and being proud that something they are doing for themselves in finally working.

I don’t know whether Doctor Huizenga’s news for the contestants took many of them by surprise. There is enough information out there; about the effects of obesity, on one’s health. All of them have probably seen the toll it takes on their food bills; have felt the crushing weight of the extra pounds, on their bones and muscles. They’ve seen the looks from others who judge them. All of them have probably realized they carry their weight like a sign that announces – to anyone who sees them – that they have made unhealthy choices.

So, the doctor’s speeches and medical tasks only served to illustrate what they’ve probably known, or suspected, all along: they all need to adopt healthier lifestyles, or they will pay the price of risking their future health.

Seeing Bob strapped with 300 pounds of weight was didn’t really carry as much of a visual impact as the imaging tool where the excess weight was contrasted with the rest of Michael’s body. Seeing the size of his lungs – compared to the size of the rest of his body – had the biggest impact, for me. How long can such relatively small lungs supply enough oxygen; for the rest of the body? If Michael wasn’t motivated, before, he surely must be motivated, now.

The Red Team literally saw.....
