This week on the Biggest Loser, we explored the questions of why Migdalia can’t “open up”; why Michael can’t “get down to business”, and are left to ponder the question of whether or not Melissa is telling the truth.
Everyone’s body responds differently to calorie reduction and exercise, and not everyone can lose weight at the same rate. Bob and Jillian may not understand how it feels, to be as overweight as these contestants are (although I’ve read that Jillian did struggle with excess weight, in her past). But although they may not be inside these contestants’ bodies – and they are definitely not inside their heads – they know a thing or two about what it takes for the average Biggest Loser contestant to lose weight.
They also know a thing or two about what happens when those same contestants play around with their proven weight loss instructions.
This week, the theme of how some of the contestants are treating this contest was interwoven through the usual happenings of the episode – and the full implications of these contestants’ reactions and actions are as difficult to discern as Michael’s white ribbon was, to unravel.
Miggy and Migdalia proved how physically strong they were, on the first week. They beat out every other team, on the stationery bike challenge. Miggy pumped like her life depended on it, and her daughter was no slouch, either. Their audition video described them as strong Puerto Rican women; determined to turn their lives around. Migdalia seemed especially concerned that she ensure her future health, since her husband is serving overseas, in the military. It’s easy to see both ladies have endured – and survived – a lot. But, last week, we heard nothing from either of them, and we barely saw any footage of the Green team.
This week, the Green team’s struggles were front and center; personified by Migdalia’s reluctance to bare her soul to Jillian. I couldn’t tell whether Migdalia was upset before the Pink team chose her to be the “teacher” for the week, but she was evidently angered after the decision. Miggy admitted she thought the Pink team had made the wrong choice, for them; in Miggy’s opinion, Migdalia was likelier to lose a bigger percentage of weight.
In past seasons, when a player’s choices negatively affect another team or contestant, many contestants have readily explained why that decision angered them. But Migdalia didn’t say anything to Bob or Jillian; she denied her anger, repeatedly – despite how angry her facial expression might be.
In the gym, Jillian tried the polite approach. She recognized Migdalia’s stoic nature – but also saw what Jillian termed her tendency to retreat to the bathroom, as soon as her workout became too intense. When Jillian griped to Bob about this, Bob told her to try being mean. Jillian certainly did that.
Jillian incited Migdalia’s wrath when she suggested Migdalia’s daughter was likely to become overweight; just because she has Migdalia as a role model. She pointed out that Migdalia had an overweight mother, and suggested history might repeat herself.
Migdalia’s responses were short and.....
