Biggest Loser Couples: Working Against A Blue Streak - Ranking The Remaining 11
Rankings and Commentary by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
March 18, 2010
This week on the Biggest Loser, the Black team ended up playing “Cinderella”, while the Blue team got pampered, at the spa.

Going to the spa is usually a kiss of death, for a team; they tend to slack off and gain weight. If that wasn’t enough; to stack the decks in favor of the Black team, the Blues lost this week’s challenge and got saddled with a 5-pound disadvantage.

Any reasonable person could expect Blue to lose the weigh in, right?

Not hardly. The Blues smoked the Blacks, once again. The Black team can’t seem to get a break.

Unless, of course, you change your perspective. Jillian reminded her team they didn’t come to the Ranch to wallow in a spa. They came to lose weight. And all of them are doing just that.

But, that’s not really accurate, Jillian. If losing weight was the ONLY prize, Jillian would have a point. But it isn’t. There is a big prize – and potential endorsements, galore – in store for the winner of the “game”.

To the extent that all of them will “win” a new chance at life, they are all winners. So, playing games with your weight and manipulating the team set-up is not a good strategy – IF all you care about is learning this new lifestyle.

But, season after season, even though most contestants DO get a new lease on life, many also waterload, manipulate, and play favorites in order to vie for the prize.

None of them really “needed” a spa visit (that’s right, Ashley. I’m talking to you) But if this show was really all about the weight loss, it wouldn’t include half the things it did.

What’s going on, with this Black team? Michael stacked the deck, when he chose the teams. We get it. His male-dominated team is capable of winning physical challenges, and of achieving a bigger percentage of weight loss. This is true. But, is this the reason they’ve lost two weigh-ins?

It could be. Or, as Jillian and Bob have often said, stress and negative emotions can often hamper weight loss. Every contestant wants to stay on the Ranch, and if you feel as though you are at a disadvantage, you’re going to feel stress. So: solidarity or no (and the Black team has a really good team bond, as far as I can see) they are all stressed out.

This week, the producers obviously tried to give the Black team a chance to win. Both challenges had nothing to do with physical prowess or size. They could easily have won the trivia challenge. (Blueberries have omega-3 fats? Really?) But, they did win the bigger prize. Past seasons haven’t given a 5-pound advantage. Surely, the producers thought: surely that 5 pounds would be enough.

We now know; it wasn’t. They would have needed over 15 pounds. What will the producers try next, in order to “even the playing field”? Will they tie lead weights to the Blue team’s ankles? Put birdshot in their pockets? Hide the Blue team’s Extra Sugar Free Gum?

Having said that, and recognizing the Black team was fighting a losing battle, the team didn’t have much choice about sending Sherry home, this week. Sherry was the oldest team member, and was less physically able to help with challenges. She also has less weight to lose; she will have difficulty dropping large numbers. While it might have seemed “fairer” to send home Stephanie (two weeks of low numbers) or Andrea, (consistently lower numbers; from the start) it made more sense, from the standpoint of future challenges and weigh-ins, to send home Sherry.

Did it reinforce the young.....
