Biggest Loser Couples: They Ain’t Heavy – They’re Our Finalists! - Ranking The Remaining 4
Rankings and Commentary by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
May 19, 2010
This week on the Biggest Loser the two contestants who began the season as the heaviest of each gender were confirmed as the two definite finalists for the big prize.

Both of them walked blissfully and confidently, hand in hand, across the finish line at the end of the marathon and then lost enough weight to qualify.

In contrast, the man who brashly promised his friends and family he’d win the title of Biggest Loser ran from his home routine to train in Las Vegas – and, although he lost weight, did not yet qualify for the finale.

In an even more startling contrast, the perennial frontrunner, whose appearance and life have been transformed enough that he annihilated the Biggest Loser marathon record gained two pounds and is now struggling with the habit of late-night eating.

Koli and Daris are now pleading for “America’s votes” as to which of them should be in contention for the big prize.

For me, the vote is a no-brainer.

I am hoping that, at best, Koli will be this season’s Heba.

If that happens, no matter who wins, let the confetti fall.

When the season began, the Grey Cousins seemed admirable and easy to root for. In the ensuing weeks – especially in these last few weeks – although I still heartily admire his accomplishment and am glad he’s succeeded, Koli hasn’t endeared himself to me.

Again and again, we’ve seen gameplay have a major impact on who gets sent home. Again and again, teammates will do whatever it takes – alliances, manipulation, temptations, etc – to gain an advantage for themselves or their teammate. I don’t like it because I think it takes the emphasis from what is supposed to be the purpose of the show.

But if you are going to do it, be upfront about it. And, more importantly – DON’T trash others for gameplay if you are going to engage in gameplay of your own.

Every contestant on the show has a right to have confidence in him or herself. They all have the right to believe they can win. But, as close as the scores of this group of contestants has been, there is no one of these four who should be sure of their victory. Koli’s promise to win the game smacks of the same arrogance he showed on the Ranch; decrying Melissa’s gameplay while going on to eat 4,000 calories a few weeks later, in order to give his cousin a leg up.

I don’t wish him any ill will. I hope he listens to Bob, because win or lose; he needs to see it’s not all about this one day in time. Whether he makes it to the top three or not – and then whether he becomes the Biggest Loser or not, he has the rest of his life to live. If he wants to keep from going back to his old self, he has only to look at Daris to see it’s not impossible to do so. Granted: Daris with two added pounds today is a HUGE improvement over the “old” Daris, but seeing his formerly unbeatable opponent putting on a few pounds has got to be reminding Koli that NO ONE is immune to the return of their old lifestyle.

So, we have a vote.

I voted for Daris. All ten votes on all three of my email addresses. I don’t really want to see Koli win even the at-home prize (because he has a great chance to do so) BUT that would be preferable to having him vie for the big prize.

I have been rooting for Daris many weeks. I’d like to see him win. I’d at least like to see him back on track and losing weight OR building significant muscle. He’s done an amazing job and he deserves to win.

But if Michael or Ashley win, I’d be just as happy now.

I think I can relate to Daris. The type of problem he was having with food resonates with me; it’s the same problem I have. Seeing him gain “only” two pounds, in a month where he prepared himself to run a marathon with a time he can justifiably be proud of isn’t as laudable as seeing him do the same preparation and LOSE weight, but I can honestly say it’s understandable. I felt for him as he cried. I do think he deserves that second chance.

It would be amazing if Michael won – and I think the show would be the better for it. For them to be able to take a man who weighed over 526 and have him finish in the “200s” is nothing short of a miracle. Michael deserves credit for an amazing job. I hope he keeps the weight off and it would be fun to see him win.

I feel the same about Ashley. Her early pictures didn’t show much promise and her early efforts did not stand out as significant. But, little by little (not unlike Helen Phillips) she lost and lost and kept on losing until the end. She’s become so lovely and her face is so animated; it’s clear she is in love with life and ready to go for whatever comes next.

Speaking of Ashley and Michael, how cute were they during the marathon? It was wonderful to see these friends band together and ignore the obsessed record breaker and the moody loner and finish the race together, as they’d planned. I love that they found each other; there’s a friendship which should last – and benefit both friends – for life.

The season is almost over and I honestly don’t know who will win. If Daris is voted in, I think any of the three could make it. My money’s on Michael but that’s just a hunch. If Koli is voted in, I think he could win. I’m sorry, but that’s another reason I voted for Daris. If Daris wins, it’s all good. But if Koli gets in and wins, I’ll be sadder for Michael or Ashley than I would be if Daris won the prize.

Here is how they rank, this week:
