Biggest Loser Families: Jillian’s “World of Hurt”
Episode 4 Recap by Donna Emery
October 9, 2008
This week on the Biggest Loser, Jillian showed her team what she meant by “being nice.”

I’ve had more pleasant visits to the dentist.

The episode began with the contestants sharing their feelings about their progress. Orange Team’s Ed said that he was glad the show is focusing on family dynamics, this season. Brown’s Brady said that his wife motivates him and he’s glad he is sharing this experience with her. Pink’s Renee shared her feelings about how she and Michelle hadn’t spoken for so many years and are now able to share this experience. Purple’s Shellay noted that she was glad to have the “security of working with a loved one” but she’d been upset to find that last week’s weigh-in had led to the breakup of one of the teams. She didn’t know how she’d feel if she and Amy were separated. Michelle called the new elimination rule “a reality check. You know that someone has to go home, but I thought it would keep being teams.” Purple’s Amy agreed, and realized that the show always had a surprise for the groups. Red’s Phil said that since the families now could be split up, he knew they’d just have to keep working their butts off.

Yellow’s Coleen was especially effected by the new rule, since it was her dad Jerry that had been sent home. She was very upset about being alone, and realized that “everyone else here has someone else, except me.”

When Jillian entered the gym she saw right away that Jerry was gone, and she was left with 5 women. She smiled and called them “my girls.” She asked the other women to leave so she could talk to Coleen alone. She asked how Coleen felt, and she said she felt “kind of numb.”

”I just want to make sure you feel zero guilt about your decision,” Jillian told her. She replied that she doesn’t feel guilty but wishes she could have helped her dad more. Jillian gently told her, “the only one who can help your dad is your dad.” She urged Coleen to focus on herself. Coleen admitted that this is scary. Jillian assured her that the self-focus will make her better. Coleen replied that “better is scary. My dad wanted me to be sure I wouldn’t make his mistakes. It was a great gift, but it’s still scary.”

Jillian cemented her renewed commitment to Coleen by giving her a special workout tape with her voice on it. She told her that she would be with Coleen all the time and that she wouldn’t feel so alone.

Bob met with his team in the gym and told them that everyone has fire inside of them, and that everyone needs to find their own fire. The guys definitely felt like that fire was burning them. Ed said that every day got harder.

Brown’s Vicki asked if she could speak to Bob alone. She was worried because her knee injuries meant she couldn’t run. She said she’d seen how running could increase the amount of calories the other women burned. Bob told her that she could achieve the same results by walking on a higher incline on the treadmill.

Vicki then talked about how she often feels that her husband, Brady holds her back when she works out. Because Brady can achieve his calorie goal sooner during a workout, he gets frustrated when he sees that Vicki must remain in the gym to achieve hers. He wants them to do everything together and gets frustrated about waiting for Vicki to finish.

Bob told Vicki she needs to be selfish and focus on herself. He commented “couples can be enablers.” Vicki vowed to believe in herself more and not let anyone stand in her way.

Vicki later took Brady aside and talked about her feelings about how he holds her back in the workouts. She asked him to let her stay and complete her goals.

Brady was surprised to hear her say he is holding her back. “Do what you need to do,” he encouraged her. He explained that he just wanted them to be together, but he was willing to let her do what she needs to do. Vicky commented that Brady wants to protect her, but she has to do her own thing. They kissed and said they love each other.

Red’s Phil and Amy were bonding in their own way: by taking the trip home that they’d won on Week One. Their kids were surprised but happy to see them and they were both glad to see the kids. Amy said the kids had grown. When the kids were done marveling over their parents’ weight loss, Phil suggested a family hike. When he asked the older son about how often they’d gone on family hikes before the Biggest Loser, the son couldn’t remember very many.

But the Red Parents found a nearby park, with a trail called the Turtle Trail. Phil mused that it is the beginning of a new life for them, and they should do something like this every day. He knew he could take the lead to help his whole family get healthy.

It was hard for the Red Parents to say goodbye, but they knew they were going back to learn how to get that new healthy lifestyle.

Another team decided to enjoy their first-week prize, too. The Purple Team had won 24 hours with their trainer. They seemed to think this might entail a restful time of bonding with Jillian, but they overlooked Jillian isn’t a restful type of gal. Instead of a tea party and getting their nails done together, Jillian brought them to a 24-hour Fitness spa. Shellay got on the stairmaster and began to show her fear of the intense kind of workout that Jillian envisioned. She couldn’t keep her hands off the stairmaster handles, despite Jillian’s bullying. Although Jillian began the day saying that she was trying “this thing called patience,” she soon admitted that “patience is not my thing.”

Jillian had very little tolerance for Shellay’s fears and resistance. “Don’t say, ‘I can’t.’ I’ll break your fingers.” When Shellay protested that she was having problems with her legs, Jillian retorted, “It’s not your legs. The problem is in your head.” Shellay also couldn’t stop holding onto the handrail, despite Jillian’s threat: “if she puts her hands on that rail again, I’ll break off Amy’s arms and beat her with them.” Shellay finally finished her ordeal on the stairs, and moved over to the exercise area. Jillian warned her: “I don’t want any lip out of you,” and Shellay agreed.

She may not have talked back, but Shellay couldn’t do the exercises Jillian’s way, either. She wasn’t bending her knees to the extent that Jillian wanted. “Bend your knees or I’ll break them with this pole,” she shouted. When Shellay complained of a sore neck, Jillian replied that she didn’t care if Shellay’s neck broke in half.

She threw the medicine ball back.....
