Canadian Idol: Top Six Week - Country Music Is Still Alive
Recap by Jon Dos
August 8, 2007
The Performance Show
Last week on Canadian Idol, the Idols took on "The Music of Queen" with special guests, Brian May and Roger Taylor. It was a surprisingly decent show but as usual, we lost another one of my favourites and Brian is my only hope for this season.

Ben welcomes us a further reminds us about last weeks shocker. More importantly, he reminds viewers you have to vote for all of your favourites. Tonight the Idols will be performing Pop/Rock music. Ben walks off the stage but quickly realizes he forgot to say hello to the judges!

Zack is asked about last weeks results. Zack thinks Canada got it wrong because… Ben is still here! He doesn't know why Canada didn't vote Ben off. Ha!

Farley is asked to put a positive spin on last week's results. Farley suggests that to take advantage of an opportunity, you first have to recognize it. Everyone now has the opportunity to step up to the plate and prove why they should be here and win.

Sass is asked how last week's results will affect the psyche of the Top 6. It's going to be hard to see friends go but because this is a competition, the Idols need to channel that angst into the fact that someone has to win and it might as well be them.

Finally, Jake gives up our history lesson of the week. Rock and Top 40 radio have been separate during Jake's times but during the 90's as alternative music came around, both genres have merges. Pop/Rock is anything popular, and anything in the Top 40.

Our videos are courtesy of Maroon 5. In our opening clip, the band says they love pop music and it is what drives them. It's an amazing challenge to connect with people. There is something about pop that needs to have an intangible quality to hook people, which Adam Levine loves.

Although they are our guests this week, the Idols didn't get the chance to interact with them face to face. Instead, they taped video messages which Adam Levine and James Valentine replied back to.

First up tonight is Tara Oram. Tara is excited by the theme because it allows her to step out of her comfort zone. Her question for Maroon 5 is: how do they balance a high energy performance without sacrificing strong vocals? Adams wants Tara to picture an arena with 10, 000 people. Only a few hundred can really see you well. As a result, the audience will be hearing more than seeing. Never let the physicality take away from the singing and hope the power of your voice will be enough "oomph."

Tara will be singing "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. I think Tara is getting better and better every week. The only thing I didn't like about this performance were the "whoa's" which were a bit pitchy. Overall, I think it's a decent performance.

Jake: Jake points out the song is a really tough song because it is played everywhere. Tara fell short on the singing but the performance was really strong.

Farley: To Farley, Tara came off as "too pop."

Sass: Sass thinks the song suits Tara's personality. Sass thinks Tara has a great way on stage but doesn't sing as great as she acts.

Zack: Zack cannot imagine being at a show where someone did something that awful and staying for more than a minute. Ouch!

Up next is Jaydee Bixby. Jaydee claims to have the passion and emotion, and if he has it, it'll come across. His question for Maroon 5 is: how do they deal with fame? They deal with fame by not letting it get to them. You should keep your friends and family close but never forget about the fans because they're the reason you're there. By the way, I'm in Jaydee's video package!

Jaydee is singing "Amazed" by Lonestar. Phony Jaydee is back yet again and this is just painful. I think Jaydee will finally find himself in the danger zone.

Farley: Farley can hear the 16 year old hearts throbbing but Farley's ears are throbbing.

Sass: Sass says the same thing she says to Tara, Jaydee looks better than he sounds.

Zack: Zack also says the same thing he says to Tara, if Zack walked somewhere where someone was doing that, he'd get out of there in a heartbeat. Ouch!

Jake: Jake's issue with Jaydee is that he sang "good" but Jake doesn't find it believable.

Next up, is Matt Rapley. Matt believes he can still sing a soft song and evoke emotion out of it. His question for Maroon 5 is: how do they stay focused on stage without getting caught up in the excitement? Adam says, you need to stay focused on the moment and not let it get the best of you and overwhelm you. James adds, if you focus too hard, you'll be thrown off.

Matt will be accompanying himself on the piano to Michael Bublé's "Everything." It is one of my favourite songs at the moment and Matt doesn't do the song justice. First off, he starts of ridiculously low and when he gets into his upper register, he's a bit pitchy. As for the smile, it came off a bit forced.

Sass: Sass thinks Matt gave the best performance of the night so far. Matt was shaky in the lower parts but once he kicked into the higher parts and came out and said hello, it was wicked.

Zack: With the exception of Stevie Wonder, people don't smile like that unless it's for a pageant.

Jake: Jake points out that it was a happy song and Matt delivered it that way. There was a lot of entertainment in the song. Matt looks comfortable on piano, and looked just as comfortable when he got up.

Farley: Farley agrees with Jake. Farley thinks Matt peaked with 'Whipping Post" but is evolving which is what this is about.

Next is Carly Rae Jepsen.....
