Canadian Idol: No Joy In Canadian Idol
Recap by Jon Dos
August 1, 2007
Last night on Canadian Idol the Idols opened the show with a group number. Brian and Greg are playing their guitars, and I wonder why Greg hasn't gone back to his guitar since the Top 10. There aren't any standouts (can you tell I miss Khalila already?) and it's just an okay performance.
Here comes Ben with his usual introductions. We say hello to our judges, but we'll get to them later in the show. And in case you missed the show, Ben rolls a clip of last night's performances. You can read my recap of the show here.
Enrique Iglesias is performing is single, "Somebody's Me." Before Enrique begins, he almost trips over one of the guitarist's mic stands, but doesn't knock it down. Sticking with the theme, he goes unplugged and sounds great. I enjoy his performance and I actually like Enrique's material on his new album.
Ben chats with Enrique and asks why it took three years for his recent CD to be released. What matters most to Enrique is that you need to be 100% satisfied with your album. For you trivia buffs, Enrique recorded his first album in Toronto at 19 years old. He dropped out of college but advises everyone to stay in school but chase after your dream if a door opens up.
We're treated to another performance by Enrique. He goes back to one of his older songs, "Be With You." I was really hoping he would perform "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)" but Enrique gives an energetic performance. He even jumps on top of the judge's desk then proceeds to work the crowd. Enrique deservingly gets a standing ovation from all four judges.
Since two performances by Enrique Iglesias weren't enough to draw out the show, we get some hair care filler. Next!
It's finally time for the results. CTV thanked 2.8 million people last night for their votes. Tonight, only the bottom 2 will be called to centre stage.
Ben reads the comments for Tara, Greg, Matt, and Carly, and one of them is in the bottom 2. I think it's pretty obvious that Matt is in the bottom 2 and indeed he is.
The remaining four, Brian, Jaydee, Dwight, and Martha, have their comments read. One of them will join Matt, and I'm standing by my pick Dwight. The other person in the bottom 2 is … Martha Joy!
Farley is asked if he is surprised based on last night. Absolutely, neither were bottom performers last night.
Sass often talks about having the complete package so what were these two missing. Of course, nothing was missing to Sass but maybe it was that "extra edge."
Zack is asked for his thoughts on how Canada voted. Zack thinks the best singers are on the couch. I guess being the "most gifted" singer and the "best technical" singer isn't good enough for Zack.
Jake is asked for any advice to the remaining seven Idols for next week's Queen theme. There's a lot to live up to. You need to make the songs your own and advises them to not try to be Freddie Mercury.
It the moment of truth and Ben announces, "Matt Rapley, Canada voted, and you are safe!"
In Martha's farewell video, she says this has been a great experience. She has learned how strong she can be, not only physically, but emotionally as well. She thanks the voters and hopes to see us again. Martha sings us out but gets teary and struggles through the song. It's another emotional eliminations and I'm really going to miss Martha.
So there we have it. My losing streak continues with another of my favourites leaving us for the third week in a row. Again, I don't know why Martha's fans didn't vote twice as hard, because they knew she dodged a bullet last week. I guess this goes to show that Martha's fans weren't as loyal as the other Idols' fans. They voted for her when she did fall, but when she didn't deliver these past two weeks, they didn't bother. I'm really disappointed in my fellow Canadians. They knew Martha was in danger and it should have been a wake up call for her fans.
Our theme next week is "We Will Rock You: The Music of Queen" with musical guests Brian May and Roger Taylor! I'm expecting Brian and Dwight to do well and Dwight better win me back over. Since my curse has continued this week, I'm going to say Brian will unfortunately be leaving next week.
