Canadian Idol: The Top Nine Perform
Recap by Jon Dos
July 24, 2007
Last week on Canadian Idol, the Idols sang to number one hits but instead, the night was full of misses. There were some surprises that came from Dwight and Matt, then there disappointing performances from early favourites Greg and Carly. For Carly, this landed her in the bottom 3, accompanied by Khalila and Mila. To my disappointment, we said goodbye to one of my favourites, Mila Miller and her fro lightning.

Ben welcomes us back to the John Bassett Theatre. Tonight we go back in time to the sixties. There was a variety of great music during this decade so just like last week, there is no excuse for not finding the perfect song this week.

Last week, Farley said the competitors didn't reach their potential. Will this week's sixties theme help them get there? Absolutely, it was a meaningful era. He hopes they buy into the theme and pick great songs. This is the perfect opportunity to show who they are and what is meaningful to them.

Sass was harsh last week. What will it take to impress her this week? They Idols need to lose the nerves because they wouldn't be here if they were not good enough. They need to pick stuff that would showcase them "in the max."

With the theme being the sixties, is this a trip down memory lane for Zack? Zack jokes that he hopes it is 1960 B.C., with B.C. hopefully standing for before Celine. He has a mean flashback but he needs a personal moment to himself so he chooses not to share what it is.

Lastly, Jake is asked how the Idols can connect to the theme, considering there were a lot of songs in the sixties with serious social and political undertones. He thinks the times today is similar to the sixties in terms of the social and political situations today. In regard to connecting to the theme, the Idols need to connect to the lyrics and pick songs that mean something lyrically. The songs have already been chosen but based on the song list; he thinks they'll do well.

We are spared video clips of the Idols and we get right into the singing. First up is Jaydee Bixby singing "Runaway." Jaydee starts off weak but I think he quickly gets into the song. He has shown in the past to be a great performer but he didn't really work the stage. This is not his best, but since the Top 10, I've been impressed with him. Hey, its Tyler Mullendore is in the audience showing some support for the Idols

Jake: Jake thought Jaydee sang the song well in terms of the notes. However, Jaydee wasn't in the pocket with the band and we need to feel him a little bit more.

Farley: Vocally, it was a good performance. Jaydee puts a lot of power in what he does. Farley was hoping for more risk and adventure, and possibly joining in on the falsetto with the ladies… and the gentleman!

Sass: Sass loved the singing but would've loved more movement. Jaydee replies that he will get off his horse and try next week. Ha!

Zack: Zack liked that Jaydee decided to show some chest hair! On a serious note, he thought Jaydee was "groove-less" off the top and was unsure if Jaydee was singing the right notes. He digs the song but thinks Jaydee can be retro in a modern context.

Fellow country singer Tara Oram is up next. Surprisingly, she doesn't go country this week. She has chosen "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis. Right off the bat, I am liking it! This is what Tara should've been doing all along. I have only one issue but don't worry; it's only a minor one. She has a tendency to stomp her foot and when the camera is focused just on her face, it's like she getting shook or something. Other than that, this is easily her best performance.

Farley: This performance took Tara places we have never seen her go vocally and Farley found it cool she tried these things. It was a good song choice.

Sass: This was the best performance Sass has ever seen by Tara. Tara had awesome energy and did a good job.

Zack: For the first time, there was no nonsense from Tara. She was fierce and physically strong. She stepped up and picked a song that was absolutely "bang on." This was her best performance and this is exactly where she should be.

Jake: Jakes doesn't have much to add except that the judges were wrong last week because this week was her best performance.

Next up is Matt Rapley.....
