Dancing With The Stars 8: Competition Tighter Than A Bride’s Nightie
Commentary and Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Joseph Braverman
May 16, 2009
This is the penultimate week leading into the Dancing with the Stars finale, and I could not be any more excited to see who walks away with that esteemed mirror ball trophy. The semifinals week really was a throwaway, because as much as I absolutely have become a fan of Ty and Chelsie, there was no way they were going to make it into the finale, and I’m happy to report the American public did not throw us any curve balls during the results show. Would I have rather Shawn Johnson leave before Ty? Personally speaking, most definitely, but I think it would have made the finale less tense, as Ty would have had zero shot of winning. In this case, if I had my way, I would rank the remaining contestants equal to each other, because unlike Meryl Streep in the film Doubt, I do not carry my certainties with me, and can only speculate as to who will come out victorious on Tuesday night.

The performances this week were once again a little ho-hum for me. I think I still am missing that awestruck performance that leaves viewers jaws dropping down like an anvil, but hopefully with next week’s finale the freestyle will give us the wow factor I have been missing all season. Shawn Johnson’s argentine tango was still a bit amateurish to me. Out of the all the dancers left, I find her the most problematic because I see her making her hits and points like a robot, and less like a smooth, graceful swan. I love Melissa a lot as well, but I have to say I think the problem with her really lies in Tony’s choreography which is sometimes a bit simplistic. I think he really needs to step it up for Melissa if he wants her to win next week. I keep thinking back from season two when Tony choreographed a terrible freestyle, which may or may not have been the reason for Stacy Keibler landing in third place, and really pray that he does not pull similar garbage with Melissa during the final performances. As for Gilles, I find him almost too intense, and I still think he is lacking the softness required for many ballroom dances. I see him only as a professional latin dancer, and I still have my reservations on how big his fan base is. As great as all three of them are, they still have to improve on many things in order for them to win.

As this season draws to a close, I would like to briefly rank this season in comparison to other season’s past. As a whole, I would say it was pretty decent, and had undoubtedly the best talent ever in the competition. That being said, aside from Ty Murray, I never really saw an improvement and transformation like I usually do from other contestants. Gilles, Shawn, and Melissa are very good dancers, but I think their dance ability has not changed very much nor has their performance ability shifted either way since the very beginning of the show. With that said, here are my rankings of all the seasons thus far, aside from season one that is because I did not see it:

1. Season Five – Those crazy moments of injury, illness, shocking eliminations, and the astounding factor that Marie Osmond made it into the finale. I still loved Jennie Garth’s transformation through it all.

2. Season Two – A terrific final four, and Cheryl and Drew’s freestyle pretty much defined the awesomeness of the season.

3. Season Three – Mario Lopez versus Emmitt Smith still was the best finale showdown, and it really proved that America rewarded likeability over technique.

4. Season Eight – Crazy injuries, mad talent, and a come from behind star is born in Melissa Rycroft.

5. Season Seven – Brooke Burke dominated the season in and out, and is really the only winner who has never had a dance background and transformed into a professional dancer before America’s eyes.

6. Season Four – Ranks above season six only because of Joey Fatone and the dynamism which he brought to each of his performances. His Star Wars tango is one of the most memorable routines in DWTS history.

7. Season Six –This was the worst.....
