Hell's Kitchen: Love And War In Hell's Kitchen Commentary and Recap by RTVC Staff Writer Pamela O. August 11, 2010
They say all’s fair in love and war, and there’s a little bit of both in the season finale of Hell’s Kitchen.
The finalists, Jay and Holli, must set aside their blooming relationship to battle against each other in the kitchen for the last time.
In the last week's episode, Chef Gordon Ramsay asked Ben and Autumn to leave before naming Jay and Holli as the top two contestants in the competition. After congratulating them, they return to the dorms to celebrate.
Jay is happy to be left with Holli, but he admits that it was a little unexpected for him. He thought Ben would be his final competition. “I think I underestimated Holli,” Jay says, “But I can beat her.”
The next day, Jay and Holli must each work with a sous-chef to finalize their customized menus. At the end of the planning session, Jay and Holli are told to get dressed for a surprise outing courtesy of Chef Ramsay. The two are driven in a sleek black limo to a posh hotel. Ramsay greets them and escorts them into the elevator, then they all make their way up the building. As soon as they step out, they are welcomed by a crowd of fans.
The finalists go to the stage, where Ramsay announces that he has invited five executive chefs from England to judge a cooking challenge between Holli and Jay. The news is unexpected, and on top of the fans’ warm welcome, Holli feels almost overwhelmed. “I’m surprised I didn’t fall off the stage,” she says.
Ramsay tells the two that they must cook five dishes in an hour, including an amuse-bouche, cold and hot appetizers, as well as meat and fish entrees. As they prepare in the kitchen, the crowd watches them on two large screens. Persistent fans continue to cheer Holli on while she works.
Once the time is up, the contestants return to the stage where they meet the five judges. One by one, the guest chefs taste a dish from each of the finalists. Holli openly agrees with Ramsay that the first judge is a good-looking man. Despite her attempts at flirting, the judge gives the first point to Jay. The next judge, however, gives the second round to Holli, and she also wins the third. The fourth judge walks up to the center of the platform. He praises both dishes, but in the end he gives the point to Jay. “If you’re talking Savoy London, it’s definitely Jay’s,” the chef says. Now it’s all up to the final judge.
For the last point, it’s Holli’s fillet versus Jay’s Kobe New York Strip. Stuart Gillies of the Savoy Grill declares Jay the challenge winner. Jay is ecstatic and says, “I feel like I’m already a step closer to winning this bitch.” Holli is disappointed but she doesn’t let her loss get her down. When it comes down to it, she knows that the dinner service is the most important part.
