High School Musical: This is Not the Shayna Show!
Recap by Jenny Lane
August 20, 2008
Previously on High School Musical, Briana and Christie were the first two finalists to be sent to the chorus. Stan and Shayna continued their flirtation, causing some jealousy among the other kids. The focus of last week’s exercises was communication, and they did exercises to work on their nonverbal communication skills.

Later, the ten finalists sang duets for the faculty. Isiah was declared the week’s winner (winner of what, I’m not sure). Anthony and Ether were sent to the chorus, to join Briana and Christie. That leaves just eight finalists (Isiah, Tierney, Stan, James, Bailey, Shayna, TJ and Christina).

This week’s episode begins with all the kids in homeroom. Anthony says it’s hard to be in the chorus, when “others are here for the wrong reasons, they’re just here for the prize and not to embrace the whole experience.” He’s referring to Shayna, who he was very vocal about disapproving of last week. TJ stands up and does an impression of Nick and just then, Nick walks in.

Nick says that this week they’re tackling the subject of “rolling with the punches.” He asks the group how they handle it when things don’t go they way they want. Christina says she tries to learn from the experience. Nick says that today, they’re going to see how they deal with the unexpected. The four that are in the chorus go one direction, and the remaining kids follow Nick out of the classroom.

Nick and the kids go to the gym, where he welcomes them to their “very own karaoke parlor.” Regina is there, and she tells the group that everyone will perform a song in a combination of English, Turkish, Spanish and Hindi, which gets groans and giggles from the kids. Next to Regina are three guys. Apparently HSM is an international sensation, and these three guys are going to perform the song in their language and style for the kids to get tips from.

The first performance is from Pakistani pop star, Fahad Ahmad. I can’t really even figure out what song he’s singing, I guess I don’t know the HSM songs well enough to identify them in a foreign language. Bailey says there’s no way she’s going to be able to do this challenge, and I’m sure others are thinking the same thing.

The next singer is Kenan Dogulu, who has had 11 top selling albums in Turkey. Isaiah is watching nervously, and says he’s not happy about the challenge at all. Last but not least is Berto Ornelas, who is a member of a “Mexican super group,” whatever that means. The Spanish must sound a little more familiar, because the kids look much less nervous as they listen to him.

In another part of the campus, Anthony, Ether, Briana and Christie have their own rehearsals. They’re doing lines from a script, and Montre is helping them. Montre tells us that they’re doing “A and B scenes” which are generic, allowing the kids to put themselves into the scene. He keeps telling them to stop acting. Anthony tells us it’s a great learning experience, and he’s enjoying it.

Back in the gym, I’m not sure how this is going to work, but Regina tells Bailey that she’s first at the microphone. She’s going to sing the song in English, Turkish, Spanish and Hindi, but she hasn’t even rehearsed it. She does have the karaoke screen in front of her which shows the words, so maybe the words will be written phonetically or something. Bailey looks incredibly nervous, and the rest of the kids look nervous for her.

Regina mentions that they’re singing “Get Your Head in the Game” so at least I know what song it is now. The music starts and the English part is first. Bailey’s nerves seem to be showing, because her singing is almost frantic.

After a few lines, the Turkish comes up and Bailey stops singing altogether. The guy from Turkey is in the audience and yells out some words to try to help Bailey get going, and it works. Luckily, the Turkish is the chorus, and there aren’t a whole lot of difficult words. There’s a lot of “hadi hadi hadi hadi oyuna ver,” which is all said very phonetically.

Bailey sings a few lines of the Turkish section, and then I’m sure she’s very relieved to see that English pops up on the screen again. Then she gets Spanish, but seems much more at ease with that. By the time the Hindi comes around, Bailey is in the spirit of the challenge and goes with it and sings “dekho suno ho ek hi aim” like a trooper.

Next, we see the rest of the kids doing the same, but just little snippets of each of their performances. Everyone seems to be doing a good job, with a few problems of course. Several of them just fake it and sing nonsense when they can’t say the foreign words.

The karaoke challenge is over, and the kids are relieved. Bailey says it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be, and she tells us that she realized she can let herself go and have fun, and not be in “performance mode” all the time. Christina says it was hard for her, but she tried to just let go and roll with it.

Everyone is gathered in the common room. Isaiah and Shayna are sitting off to the side talking alone. Shayna is saying that Anthony needs to work on his performances and not rely just on his humor. Shayna tells us that she’s had “tons and tons of training since I was three, so to be compared with someone like Anthony (oh boy) is kind of unfair.”

Briana sits down to talk to Bailey and Anthony, and says “I know you guys feel the same way I do about this.” She tells us that she thinks Shayna is “a little fake” sometimes and always wants to be in the spotlight. Briana tells Bailey and Anthony that Shayna is driving her insane. Anthony tells us that Shayna doesn’t see the big picture and get involved in the exercises or try to make friends.

Meanwhile, Shayna tells Isaiah “obviously I didn’t come here thinking I was going to learn, I’ve gone to an arts school since I was in seventh grade, I just think, like, I know more, it’s like that simple.” Isaiah is sitting and listening to her and not saying a word, so maybe he’s going to be less impressed with her now. I also wonder what her parents are going to think of this side of her.

The next day, the kids are back in homeroom with Nick. Nick asks about the “general mood” and asks if anyone is bonding. Bailey says she “loves every single person in this room.” Nick asks if anyone isn’t getting along. TJ pokes Anthony, and Anthony tells him to go ahead.

TJ says “Anthony expressed to me some feelings that he was having towards Shayna, about her attitude.” Shayna looks really shocked and irritated when she hears this. Nick asks Anthony to talk about it, so he says “sometimes it feels like you’re more focused on being on center stage, I just feel like there’s times that you strive for more attention and stuff.”

Shayna smiles and says “sorry man, I don’t know what to tell you.” She tells us that she was blindsided by Anthony’s comments and it was hurtful, and that’s not what friends do.

Nick says no two people are alike, so part of what we learn in being part of a group is tolerance and understanding of other people. He says “who you start out as at the beginning of this process is not who you will end up as.” Anthony and most of the kids nod, and Shayna looks around to see what everyone else is doing, and then kind of nods halfheartedly.

The chorus heads off, and the rest of the kids are going to work on their performances. In the chorus, Christie tells Anthony that the people on the west coast know Shayna, and “she’s just that way.” Briana says they should all just talk to each other and not have drama. Anthony sits silently, not saying a word.

Nick tells the remaining finalists that they need to keep in mind that things go wrong in performances. This week, they’re working as one group, and will be singing two songs. They will sing one comedic song, “It’s All Been Done,” and one dramatic song, “Welcome to my Life.”

The kids head to rehearsals. The story line is that they’re in cliques. Stan and Christina go off and make a connection, and they work to merge the cliques. Bailey is worried because she’s never heard either of the songs. Christina is excited to have a lead part, but she’s also nervous that she won’t live up to it.

As they sit around and go through parts of the songs, they joke around a little bit (emphasis on little). Bailey interrupts and says “I don’t want to break up the fun but I’m stressed because I don’t know either song.”

Chris and Regina come in to help with the rehearsal. Regina says they’re going to go through a few exercises to help with their connections. They have them stand in two lines and look at the person standing across from them. Then one person gives a compliment to the other, and if the “compliment works for you” then you take a step forward until they meet.

Stan goes first, and tells Christina that she’s someone he could see himself falling in love with. Christina smiles, but Shayna does not. Christina takes a step forward, and then tells Stan that he seems like he’s a very good friend, and Stan moves forward.

Shayna tells James that he has “the cutest rosy red cheeks,” and Ether steps forward. James gets a serious voice and says “your eyes are as gorgeous as your personality.” Shayna says she’s going to cry, and steps forward.

Bailey tells TJ “you’re like a big teddy bear, you make me feel protected.” TJ smiles and moves forward. TJ says Bailey has “a smile that lights up an entire room” and Bailey moves forward.

Tierney tells Isaiah “when you sing, I get lost in your voice.” Isaiah moves forward and then says “Tierney, you have a uniqueness that’s undeniably beautiful” and she moves forward.

Regina tells everyone to join hands and look in each other’s eyes. Then they are told to back away as if they’re backing away from the relationship. Chris tells the guys that they have one word to say to win the girls back.

Stan says “trust.” James says “please” and looks like he’s going to cry. TJ says “passion” which seems odd. Isaiah takes a step forward, gets down on his knees, grabs Tierney’s hands and says “please.” It’s interesting, because earlier he said that James was a cornball when he said the thing about Shayna’s personality, and now he’s the cornball. Isaiah tells us that he and Tierney made a real connection. Tierney tells us that the relationship exercise was awkward, so apparently she doesn’t feel the same. Everyone hugs, and the exercise is over.

Back in the common room, the kids talk about their day. Shayna tells us that she doesn’t plan to talk to Anthony, but she’ll talk to him if he wants to talk to her. She’s sitting with Stan (who is basically sitting on top of her and he’s rubbing her leg) and the rest of the finalists. Shayna says she thinks Anthony should have come and talked to her. The others try to tell her that Anthony wasn’t targeting her and try to make her feel better.

Shayna starts to cry and says that it really hurt for him to say that she shouldn’t be there, and that she hates when people don’t like her. Hmm, maybe she just doesn’t like that she was called out. Or maybe she’s taking this opportunity to grab the spotlight (and camera time) again.

Anthony and the rest of the chorus come in and I’m sure they feel the tension in the air. Anthony starts to talk to Shayna and says he wanted to talk one on one. Shayna says “yah, we’re talking about it in front of the group again.” Anthony asks her if she wants to go talk one on one, and Shayna says “no, I don’t wanna go.” TJ tells her that they need to talk, and she says “no, TJ stop.”

Tierney wins the prize for me, because she says “well then I don’t want to hear anything else about it.” Isaiah says the two of them should go and talk alone. Shayna puts her hands over her face and starts to cry and says she doesn’t want to again. The rest of the group decides to get up and leave Anthony and Shayna alone.

By ‘alone’ I mean Anthony, Shayna, Bailey and Stan, who is still sitting on Shayna and rubbing her leg. Shayna cries and has the ‘poor poor me’ thing in high gear. She’s saying how much it hurt to be called out, and I’m about to go crazy here, I’m so sick of hearing her blubbering.

In the auditorium, it’s time for last minute rehearsals before the performances. It’s not going as well as it could, and all of the kids seem to be nervous about the songs. Nick comes out and it’s time for the performance.

“Welcome to my Life” is up first. The kids are standing on the set of a building, which looks like they’re outside of an apartment building. They’re in two separate groups, and each group is dressed totally differently so that we know they’re two cliques. Then Christina and Stan get in between the two groups and they sing to both sides.

Nobody is standing out to me as the strongest or weakest. Jen tells us that she thought TJ connected to the song. Tiana says Bailey has a great voice, but wasn’t connecting to her character enough.

Then the group launches into the peppy song, “It’s All Been Done.” They’re bouncing around the set, pulling wagons and pushing bikes (yes, really). The guys are all singing to one of the girls, trying to win them over. By the end, they’re all happy couples, and they’re all paired off and dancing around together.

Regina says Stan was supposed to be the leading man, but he didn’t step up to the challenge. She was more impressed with TJ and Tierney. Montre says he loves James, but when he’s performing, he sings and looks like “he’s possessed” which isn’t a good look. He also thinks Shayna let her down, and she’s holding back.

The kids are waiting as the judges deliberate. James says he thinks his performance was good, but not good enough. He thinks this was the last time he performed on that stage. Isaiah says he couldn’t get it right, but Christina says he kept rolling with it, and that’s what it was about this week.

It’s time for the results. Nick announces that the winner this week is Tierney, who looks shocked. Tierney reads the name of the rest of the finalists who are moving on.

The first name is Christina, followed by Isaiah, TJ and Stan. The last name is James, who looks shocked. That means that Bailey and Shayna are moving to the chorus. Shayna nods and smiles, and Bailey breaks down and sobs.

Bailey tells us that she’s proud that she made it this far, and it’s going to make her a better person. Shayna says she’s going to make the best of things, and she’s going to “kill it in chorus.” As usual, the kids all start singing, and that’s the end of another week!
