Losing It With Jillian: Life Doesn't Work That Way

Jillian Michaels
We have seen the final episode of Losing It With Jillian. I, for one, am not unhappy to see it end. And, I fear, it did not go out with a bang, but with a whimper.
The premise this show has maintained all summer was followed to a “T”. Only the names are different from what has gone before.
We have a family, with at least one member in deep trouble due to overweight and related issues. We have a person in deep denial, a person who has been enabling and a heartstring pulling person, in this case a child, who is in immediate danger.
The Alvarez family of Florida includes dad, Big Dave, who is carrying twice his normal body weight, who is in danger of complete suffocation multiple times a minute during sleep, and who refuses to acknowledge any of it. Mom, Carmen, is also heavy but is not as disabled as Big Dave. Little Dave is only nine and already is pre-diabetic and having to test his blood regularly. Daughter, Melissa, is pretty normal – not as thin as girls her age would like to be, but not heavy enough to warrant any screen time on this show.
Big Dave’s immediate issue is apnea. He gets so little oxygen during sleep that he may die in the night on any given night. Big Dave’s psychological thing is that he is in denial. He’s embarrassed and the CPAP machine isn’t comfortable so just never mind. Everyone else is a nag and he’s the big man in the family so leave him alone. He threw the last CPAP machine away.
Shall we rewind tapes and see how many of the eight episodes of this show fit this scenario?
Carmen is the standard Helpless Enabler. Unhappy with being considered the nag, she tries to achieve change by wishing and hoping.
Shall we rewind tapes and see how many of the eight episodes of this show fit this scenario?
Little Dave is a big kid for his age and the weight is a social problem for him. The impending diabetes is serious and Little Dave is following his dad down the path of denial.
Jillian gets Carmen turned around with one of her standard Yelling in the Gym routines. I’m not sure why being yelled at and forced to scream affirmations turns people around. I don’t think I would react in any way positive to that. I would, in fact, hate it. It would strike fear into my heart and I would make sure there was no Jillian within a hundred miles before I set foot in the gym. Teach me how and encourage me to take one more step and one more after that if I start to flag or falter, but in the name of all that’s Holy do NOT scream at me. I’ll emotionally curl up like a hedgehog and quit hearing any of it. Maybe that’s just me and maybe I’m odd.
But, hey … Jillian gets Carmen on the track to being able to Just say No to Big Dave and all is well. Standard script for the show.
Another standard feature.....
