Project Runway: Ice Ice Baby - Episode 6 Recap
Recap by Romantic Rose
September 25, 2009
On last night's Project Runway, the designers' challenge is to create a look inspired by a movie genre. Tim Gunn meets the designers on Stage 6 with Collier Strong from L'Oreal and explains that each designer will select a film genre and invent a character who lives in that genre. Collier Strong will help with the make-up. Since Irina won the last challenge, she gets to pick first. Then the other designers will select from five genres, with two picks for each of the genres film noir, period piece, sci-fi, action/adventure, and Western. Anyone besides me wish Chris March would be the guest judge?
Irina selects film noir. Logan and Carol Hannah get action/adventure; Ra'mon and Nicolas take sci-fi; Louise, who should be in her comfort zone, and Althea also want film noir; and Gordana and Christopher will design period pieces. Shirin and Epperson, the last to pick, are stuck with Western, which no one wanted. The designers have one day and a budget of $150. Tim tells them to figure out their characters.
After their usual trip to Mood for fabric and materials, the designers get to work. Shirin plans to do a saloon girl outfit. Carol Hannah's idea is sexy assassin. Logan plans a militaresque look. Meanwhile, Carol Hannah interviews that Logan is hot, in case we missed previous Logan hot flashes by Fatma and Jennifer Rade. I can't disagree. Bring back the silver pants, Logan!
Epperson struggles with his concept for Western but eventually comes up with the idea of a beautiful woman whose husband is off at war, so she has to run the ranch in his absence. Gordana picks the '20s as her time period, while Nicolas's concept is a white queen who rules over the universe. Ra'mon admits he's a Trekkie, and he plans to create a human/alien hybrid. Louise has not created her story as she starts her dress, and Nicolas thinks she may have a problem. Logan very perceptively said the win would come down to who interpreted the challenge best.
When Tim comes to the workroom to see the designers' works in progress, he starts with Gordana, who explains she's creating a dress for a woman in her 30s. Irina interviews that she doesn't see Gordana at Bryant Park. Christopher is creating a dress for a Victorian vampire bride. Tim questions the dress's bare arms. Epperson shows Tim his "Annie Get Your Gun" creation, and Tim thinks the ruffles have a profound visual impact. When he sees Ra'mon's lizard jumpsuit, Tim says it could be sublime or a big hot mess. Louise shows Tim an underdress and describes the overdress. Tim says what she achieves doesn't always show well on the runway. Tim thinks Nicolas is playing it too safe, and he advises everyone to be more ambitious.
As the workday nears its end, Ra'mon decides his jumpsuit is Kermit the Frog gone wrong. He needs to rethink his design, but there are only two hours left. All the designers are feeling the pressure, and Shirin interviews she is just focused on making the best saloon dress she can.
The morning of the runway show, Nicolas says his dress is not complete. Tim tells them to work like there's no tomorrow, because "for one of you, there won't be." What happened to "make it work," Tim? Have you gone all apocalyptic on us? Many of the dresses are not finished, and Ra'mon and Irian seem really stressed, although since Irina has immunity, so if she doesn't finish, she still won't be eliminiated.
The judges for this episode are John Varvatos, Zoe Glassner, and costumer designer Arianne Phillips. By genre, here is what the designers show:
