Project Runway: Even Designers Get the Blues - Episode 7 Recap
Recap by Romantic Rose
October 3, 2009
In last week's Project Runway challenge, designers were asked to create a look for a character in a specific movie genre.
This week, the challenge is much more practical. Heidi meets the designers on the runway to tell them it will be a colorful challenge. They return to the workroom, where Tim introduces them to Martine Reardon, an Executive Vice President at Macy's.
The challenge is to create two looks in blue that could be sold as part of Macy's Inc line. The designers have fifteen minutes to sketch before each pitches to Martine. She will pick the five designs she likes best, and the designers will work in teams of two to create the looks for the challenge. By the designers' reactions, you can tell they would rather be steam-cleaned by Johnny than work in teams, but the prize is worth it.
The winning designer will not have immunity for the next challenge, but the winner will create a holiday dress to be sold at Macy's. The designers have $100 and one day to complete the challenge.
Carol Hannah interview that she has an advantage, because she's so down to earth. Althea pitches first and wants to create denim, wide-leg, high-waisted pants. Aren't those the exact jeans everyone made fun of Jessica Simpson for wearing? She also wants to make a suit for work and for going out. Carol Hannah's idea is a dressy look and a casual look that can integrate with the customer's existing wardrobe. Logan and Shirin both pitch the idea of sweater dresses. Epperson's design includes a cape. Nicolas wants to make a vest. Christopher bases his workplace design on a men's shirt, and Louise sees a simple cotton dress with ruffles. Gordana pitches a '70s look, and Irina wants to make a patchwork outfit and a work outfit.
Martine selects the team leaders: Althea, Carol Hannah, Christopher, Louise, and Irina.Tim brings out the dreaded velvet bag, and the team leaders take turns drawing their name from it. Althea chooses first, and she selects Logan. Christopher will be working with Epperson; Louise selects Nicolas and interviews that her design is so strong, she's very confident. Irina's next, and she asks Shirin and Gordana which one of them wants to work with her. Gordana volunteers, so Shirin will work with Carol Hannah.
At Mood, Carol Hannah and Shirin can't find the denim they want so they just grab a bunch of fabric and plan to decide later. Irina interviews that having a partner stresses her. SHe would rather do it herself. Nicolas tells us he hates ruffles. Christopher is open to Epperson's ideas. The two of them certainly seem to be getting along better than Epperson and Qristyl did.
Nicolas tells us that Louise is making bird noises. She says it helps keep her calm, and she does a few for the camera. Althea likes working with Logan. She jokingly calls him her seamstress, and he says he prefers the term seamster. Irina doesn't like Gordana's design, but she doesn't give her any direction.
Tim comes into the workroom to.....
