Project Runway: Back in Black

On the latest episode of Project Runway, the final three designers face their biggest challenge: design a collection of twelve looks with a budget of $9000. The relationship between Irina and Althea is still tense because of Irina's accusation that Althea stole her big sweater design. Irina interviews that the others are intimidated by her. She plans to bring out the big guns, the whole army in fact. I can't imagine why the other contestants would find talk of a full-scale military invasion intimidating.
Ten weeks later, Tim Gunn visits the contestants to check on their progress. First up is Carol Hannah, who has made the move from Charleston to Huntington, New York, where she's staying with friends. During the long drive from Charleston, she stopped for a tour of Duke University. The architecture she saw there inspired her, and she has created a collection that includes dresses and pants with an evening touch. Yes, pants, finally! Tim seems to like the collection. He tells her to eliminate the cape on one outfit and says no to a sparkly belt she was thinking of adding to another. The collection fits with what Carol Hannah has been making all season, but it looks like she did push herself to create some separates.
Carol Hannah tells Tim her family has flown in to support her and to meet him and that they're having a Southern dinner. We see Tim with an apron tied over his suit to help with making biscuits. Even in a floral apron, he still has style! Over lunch, Carol Hannah shares how she was an awkward child with "monkey arms." She reminds us she is not a fashion school graduate. Her grandmother taught her to sew, and she made doll clothes. As Tim leaves, he tells her her collection is good, and they hug goodbye in the snow.
Next TIm heads to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to visit Irina and meet her yappy and maybe, possibly, spoiled rotten, dog Princess. Irina recalls growing up in Brooklyn and visiting Coney Island. Her collection celebrates and thanks New York. She tells us again that her parents are from the Republic of Georgia. She doesn't mention it, but I think there're a couple of grenades under her work table with Althea's and Carol Hannah's names on them.
For her collection, Irina has made boyfriend shirts with a design of Coney Island on them. Her other items include knits and furs. The pieces are mostly black. Tim advises her to make sure her pieces don't look forced. The Coney Island design is actually kind of cute, but it doesn't fit with most of the pieces she's made this season, what Nina Garcia describes as "luxe." Some of the other designs look more typical of her work.
Later Tim meets Irina's friends and family in a restaurant for dinner. Irina explains that her parents are counting on her and her sister to achieve the dreams they couldn't. Her mother is very supportive, but her dad hasn't always supported her dream. Winning Project Runway would get Daddy's approval and, by the way, also prevent the appearance of military troops around the Bryant Park tents.
Tim's last visit is to Dayton, Ohio. Althea was inspired by the women in sci-fi movies. Tim likes an oversized sweater coat hopefully not stolen from Irina via long-distance x-ray vision. He has more concern over a long coat and says it looks costumey, like something out of the Old West. He tells Althea not to lose sight of who she is and to edit, edit, edit.
