Project Runway: A Walk in the Park

Project Runway is back in New York, the city that schools fashion wannabes from all over the country.

Whether it was the location, the change in networks, or just the group of designers chosen, last season seemed lackluster and uninspired.

Here's hoping for a return to the good ol' days!

On the season premiere, contestants arrive in New York and settle into the beautiful apartments at Atlas, "Gotham's luxury apartment building," as Heidi tells us.

We meet Anthony Williams, a designer from Birmingham, AL, who had to overcome being black and gay in the ghetto. That's right. African-American boys in Birmingham are supposed to play football, not design pageant gowns. I'm guessing his childhood included its fair share of trauma.

We also meet Ping Wu, a physical therapist who's interested in how the body moves;

Pamela Ptak, an ad exec who reached the top of her profession and decided she needed another challenge; Jonathan "The Animal" Peters, who growls and says he's looking for the place where "gritty meets pretty;" and Jesse Le Noir, former Pirate of the Caribbean at Disney World.

The contestants join Heidi on the rooftop, where they sip champagne, except for Heidi, who's pregnant with her what must be her tenth child. She introduces Tim Gunn, who sparkles in his natural setting: a background of New York City rooftops.

At the party, contestant Emilio Sosa says he's been working in costume design, because he needed a job. Ben Chmura has worked with comic books, and Christiane King has won awards for her designs. She likes layers and textures and is inspired by the 24/7 colors of the Ivory Coast, as opposed to the lazy colors in New York that take Sunday afternoons off.

Heidi gathers the designers around, and Tim tells them to meet him at Central Park in the morning to learn the details of the first challenge. When they show up the next morning, they see fabric draped on benches and racks all around the trees. I wonder what passersby thought, but they're New Yorkers. They've probably seen stranger things. Anthony observes, "Lord have mercy, Mood Fabric has come out here and hang their fabric to dry." My guess is that Anthony had to develop the ability to make people laugh in order to survive being black, gay, and ghetto, so I'll give him a pass on the faux folksiness. For now.

Tim explains that Mood has donated the fabric, but they're missing one thing: you. For this challenge, the designers have to create a look that embodies who they are. They have three minutes to gather as much fabric as they can. In a scene that resembles the Running of the Bulls, or, as Emilio puts it, fat people at an open buffet in Vegas, designers push others aside and attempt to gore each other with fabric bolts in order to obtain the best chiffons and jerseys.

When they're all standing around him.....
