Project Runway: The Five-Fabric First Episode
Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery
January 18, 2010
This week on Project Runway, we were introduced to the new crop of hopeful designers – and they introduced themselves to the judges.

As always, someone we barely had gotten to know went home, on week one.

In any group of reality show contestants, there are some that stand out right away. On this show, because of the creative nature of the tasks that are given to the contestants to complete – and, therefore the potential for creative personalities as well as creative and commercially appealing designs –it’s not surprising to find that quite a few of the contestants make an instant, lasting impression.

This can be both good, and bad.

After all, the show is supposed to be about the fashions. But the fashions are conceived of, and created by designers. Their personalities do come under the audiences’ scrutiny, and every one is inclined to make their own judgments and conclusions about them – based, not only on the quality of their designs, but how much we enjoy – or don’t enjoy them –as performers.

It’s the first week – and we get bombarded with the faces and the backstories of 16 people we’ve never seen before. For me, some of them faded into the woodwork; they may, or may not, eventually make more of an impression. Either because of their personalities, or because of their designs, for now they make up the “middle of the pack” of the designers, in my opinion.

As in many other reality shows, the hosts of Project Runway add their own unique personalities to the mix of the show. Heidi Klum is beautiful, charming and always has an unexpectedly funny remark to add to the runway parades. Michael Kors is acerbic but funny; Nina Garcia is quiet but perceptive. My favorite is Tim Gunn; always avuncular but informative. Tim is handsome, amusing, and I always enjoy his initial reactions to the designers’creations.

I am far from a fashion expert. But, as someone once said about art: “I know what I like.” So, my reactions to the designs this season are my own opinion. And, that goes for the contestants, too. Just because someone thinks they are amusing doesn’t necessarily make them amusing, to everyone. And some contestants revealed their insecurities a bit too openly, in my opinion. It was also amusing, to me, that the three designers whose dresses ended up as the bottom three all expressed exuberant confidence and pride in their work; they were all sure they had a “winning design.”

As we saw, their opinions differed greatly from the judges’.

This week, we got to see each contestant arrive at their Manhattan lodgings, and watch as they introduced themselves to their fellow designers. After a rooftop champagne toast (from which Heidi, who described herself as “a little bit pregnant”, abstained) the contestants joined Tim in a park setting, where they ran through a forest of fabric samples from “Mood” Fabrics. After choosing as many fabrics as they could, they were then asked to pare down their selections to five fabrics – and then, to design an outfit which would show “who they are, as designers”.

After hearing their backstories, I was expecting lots of variety.

We didn’t really get all that much.

Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. Except for the first and last three rankings, the rankings are done both by my own personal opinion of the designs – and the designers. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
