Project Runway: The Beauty of Burlap - Ranking The Remaining 14
Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Donna Emery

This week on Project Runway, one of the models got the kind of “exposure” she really didn’t want.
And her designer – and a 2-time “bottom 3” denizen survived elimination, even though it’s not really clear why they did.
This week, the designers took a “field trip” – and it turned out they went to an actual field. They traveled to a farm, only to find their models, adorned with burlap sacks. Tim told them they would have to design a dress their models would have to wear, to “an industry function” out of the burlap sack.
Didn’t they have to do this, on “She’s Got the Look?” What’s next? Making singlets from Sham-Wows?
I did appreciate the creativity it took, for these designers to have to whip something up from such pedestrian materials. I admired the boldness of some of the designers’ thinking, and applauded those who dyed or otherwise transformed the fabric’s stiff and utilitarian appearance.
I was surprised at the way so many of them (Ben, Seth Aaron, Jay, Mila, and Anthony) were able to create looks that didn’t scream “burlap!” the moment I saw them, on the runway.
On the whole, I think they did a good job – although I truly don’t understand why Jesus wasn’t sent home, instead of Pamela. I don’t think Pamela’s dress was that bad; it seemed a bit plain, and accentuated her model’s bottom. Yet the judges admitted she’d dyed and constructed it well. While Jesus ignored the instructions of the judges this week – and made that crocodile gown last week. Yet, he escaped. It boggles the mind.
As for the winner, although Jay’s dress was clearly the best, Mila’s futuristic silver bars really looked exciting and bold. I would have been just as pleased with her taking the win – although I didn’t care for her attitude at all. Your model picked another designer? So what? It probably had nothing to do with you; as she explained, in “Models of the Runway”, she just wants to get to work with as many designers as possible – in order to maximize her chances of ending up walking for the finale. Taking your frustration and insecurity out on Anthony – who’s just dying to have something to be quoted about – was juvenile and petty. Anthony’s response was almost as petty, but Anthony seems to seek out these Sound Bite Moments, and doesn’t really give much thought to what he says, as long as the editors include it in the broadcasted segments of the show.
I didn’t really like Amy’s dress. It reminded me too much of the coffee filter dress, from a few seasons ago. I can understand that she and her model wanted to “preserve the integrity of the fabric”, but that meant she was stuck with a dress which had obviously made from a burlap bag. Her construction and style were, admittedly, stunning – but it was still screaming “burlap!” at the top of its stylish voice.
Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. I’ve averaged their ratings from my previous scoreboard with this week’s scoreboard, in order to determine their rankings. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
