Project Runway: Kidding Around On The Runway - Ranking The Remaining 10
Rankings by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
February 20, 2010
This week on Project Runway, the designers had to create outfits for some lively little girls. Later in the show, Tim presented them with a classic Project Runway “twist”; charging them with also creating a “companion look” for their models.

Their completed creations spanned a wide range of results: from the delightful to the disastrous.

I’m enjoying this season far more than the last one. Though this season has some designers who are difficult to like (Jesse, Mila) and some who are fun to watch (Anthony, Seth Aaron, and, in past episodes, Ping) they are, for the most part, showing greater skills than last seasons’ crop of budding designers.

Watching the various designers in this group respond to the little girls was very entertaining. And, though every little girl had to interact with the designer they were paired with, it was interesting to see who else they responded to – and who they didn’t. Anthony’s entertaining personality was a magnet to these girls; they could tell he’d have something interesting to say. He may have begged to find the girls’ “off-switch”, but it was clear he reveled in their attention – just as he does, with most sources of attention. Anthony seems to always be on-stage – whether it’s in their apartment, in the workroom, or watching the runway.

By the same token, we saw little interaction between the less warm-and-fuzzy Mila, with her little girl. She seemed to give the girl barely a glance, and then she sallied forth into her predictably color-blocked design. Jonathan – who freely admitted he doesn’t relate well to little girls – was comical in his efforts to avoid the frustration he was obviously feeling, within the chaos created by the mini-models.

I enjoyed seeing the girls walk the runway. Watching the professional models – many who usually portray a stiff and ambiguous personae on the runway – reach their hands down to herd their acolytes down the runway, was so precious. Some of the little girls had little expression and even less grace; some were precociously graceful. But all of them –even those saddled with less-than desirable designs – were fun to watch.

At this point in the competition, when we’re almost halfway done, I’d say the probable finalists are getting easy to predict. I see strong preferences, by the judges, of Mila, Seth Aaron, Amy, and Jay’s designs. They may have made some missteps – (all except Jay have been in the bottom three) but the judges recognize their ability to capture the spirit of the challenges and create looks that lend themselves to those challenges.

Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. I’ve averaged their ratings from my previous scoreboard with this week’s scoreboard, in order to determine their rankings. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
