Project Runway: If I Had A Hammer – I Could Make a Dress! - Ranking The Remaining 9
Rankings by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
March 5, 2010
This week on Project Runway, the designers went to the hardware store for their “fabrics” – and then had to produce outfits made from those materials.

The only thing more bothersome than some of the results was the incessant hammering it took to create them.

The designers began by going to see Michael Kors – who REALLY looked tired, in this episode – and he directed them to go to the hardware store for their inspiration. What did Mikie have to do with this episode? Who knows? But, of course, hardware is naturally associated with fashion, right? I mean… I know every time I am traipsing down the wrench aisle I think of how each item would look on the runway, too.

Few of the designers were feeling positive about their choices of material, but most made a valiant try. Of course, some of them – Mila, I’m talking to you – looked ticked off, even when they are at their most joyous.

The producers were not subtle at all, in their telegraphing of the winners and losers of this episode. The first person they interviewed was Emilio – whose first week’s win seems like a fluke, based on recent episodes. I think the memory of that triumph went to his head and blocked out any further opportunity to access his design skills, because although he continues to construct things well, and he can trashmouth every other contestant in the competition, his best work seems to have already happened.

Even though Emilio didn’t lose, he should have. I am not a Jesse fan; he’s done lackluster work (despite his top two showing last week) and he was unnecessarily cruel to Ping, the week of their work together. Jesse, like Mila, seems to think his own opinion of greatness is enough to convince everyone else of his magnificence. I wasn’t that impressed with his outfit this week in the first place, but once he began covering the copper exterior of his garment with gunmetal grey, I knew he was toast.

The din in that workroom scrambled more than a few brains. Jonathan and Ben are usually my unsung heroes, each week – and although Jonathan made a great outfit (albeit one overlooked by the judges) Ben’s fell into the “boring” category. So, surprisingly, did Seth Aaron – last week’s winner. OK: he had immunity. I hope that was the reason for this lackluster outfit. I saw him sweating over the metal he pounded into that bodice, so I couldn’t understand why his dress looked as boring as it did.

I think the tale was told more by the afterthoughts of their garments, in this episode. In addition to their outfits, they were asked to make an accessory for their outfit. I loved Jay’s belt; the work evidenced in that belt was wonderful. But the judges admitted – and I agree – that Maya’s key necklace was superior. As for the down side of accessories, I think Jesse’s melding of two random pieces of metal and used as a hairpiece was probably part of the reason he lost. It took no effort or thought, at all.

Once again, while I can’t see myself owning any of these outfits, the sheer imagination and skill it took for these designers – even Jesse and Emilio – to put together wearable outfits from their beginning material earned my admiration. As we continue to pare down the numbers to find the top group, I have to say whatever the top three creates should really be worth seeing.

Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. I’ve averaged their ratings from my previous scoreboard with this week’s scoreboard, in order to determine their rankings. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
