Project Runway: When Your Pantsuit Bites Back - Ranking The Remaining 8
Rankings by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery
March 12, 2010
This week on Project Runway, the designers got elemental – and the inspiration for some of the results was hard to fathom.

As the contest progresses, I have less to complain about in terms of focusing solely on just one or two telegenic designers. We’re getting to hear from all of them; to learn more of their thought processes and of their personal life.

Well, they have to fill the hour with something. Lord forbid they’d actually show more of the creative process.

The idea for the challenge was interesting, and, as Heidi said: they left the parameters vague enough to give the designers plenty of leeway in deciding how to portray one of the elements of nature.

Maybe I’m sometimes too literal minded, but when I think of interpreting the element of fire, I think red, orange and gold. I think flames. I surely don’t think of burned down houses and hair bowls. After hearing Anthony speak about his pastor’s house and listening to Amy explain her “cauldron”, I guess I get it, but I would love to have seen some bright, fiery colors on the runway.

And water? I think of blue, aqua, green… maybe silver. But a white jockstrap pantsuit and a grey dress with bubble sleeves? I didn’t get it. I like Maya and am glad she made top 3, but that dress didn’t do it for me.

I thought the designers would have a hard time; portraying air – and, yet, the three who did that element did the best job, in my opinion. The lines of Seth Aaron’s leather outfit fairly flew – and they kind of reminded me of a bomber jacket. Jay’s was really out there – and maybe I wouldn’t think “air” when I first saw it, but it definitely caught my attention and was worth a mention. Jonathan’s beautiful dress deserved the win, and I am happy he got the judges’ attention.

The earth entries were boring. Emilio did a decent job, but Mila phoned it in. The judges are finally agreeing with me: she’s a “one-trick pony”. If Mila doesn’t know how to do anything except color blocking, she doesn’t deserve to win the competition. She has obvious skill and talent; but she has a one-track sewing machine.

This was an interesting challenge, and, at this point, almost all the designers have proved their worth and all except Maya have been a challenge winner. Now that only eight are left, each challenge may become harder and harder to win. That’s always a good thing, because it can bring out the designers’ best. Unfortunately, it sometimes leads them to impulsive decisions (as it did, this week, with Ben) which can lead to a ticket home.

It is kind of hard to understand how the judges think. I can see why they didn’t like Ben and Amy’s designs, but Ben had never yet been up for scrutiny of the judges. It reminded me of the week when Janeane and Anna were in the bottom two – and they “auf’ed” Anna (who had not been in a previous bottom two) over frequent flyer Janeane. Amy has had some great designs, but her results seem to either be fantastic or flop-tastic (like those paint-sample paints of a few weeks ago). It is a shame that Ben’s first appearance, before the judges, was to be booted home. In my opinion, Ben was robbed.

The competition is shaping up to be a Jay-Seth Aaron-Mila showdown. I think. Jonathan and Anthony have had some good designs, and Maya has had some “almost” results, while Emilio and Amy are on their last straw. At least, that’s the way I see it.

Here are my reactions to each of the designers – and their designs. I’ve averaged their ratings from my previous scoreboard with this week’s scoreboard, in order to determine their rankings. I have no advance knowledge of how the competition comes out.
