Project Runway: Fashion Backward
Recap and Commentary by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Donna Emery

This week on Project Runway, we got to peek at the designers’ homes and family lives.
And, once again, the person I was rooting for went home.
It’s not that I liked Jay’s collection more than Mila’s – although I thought it was much more interesting and held more promise – he just seemed a more likeable person.
Of course, that’s not what they’re competing for. The season’s nicest person? Well, Anthony went home last week so that isn’t the contest. I know that the world of high fashion has little to do with my own quirky tastes, I guess I just hoped the judges would look at Mila’s black and white patterns and say “we’ve seen this” and let the kid have his show.
After all, it’s not as if Jay didn’t get to Bryant Park.
Project Runway always has more designers at that show than are going to be finalists. Some of those who don’t make the final three are also allowed to show full collections at Fashion Week in order not to tip off the media as to the winner. This year, ten designers got to do their collections; seven were “decoys”.
So, Jay got to show his line. He’s talented. Someone will notice and he may be able to use it as a springboard to his next step.
I enjoyed the visits by Tim to the finalists. Seth Aaron’s little family is adorable and I enjoyed him playing Pictionary. I got “stethoscope immediately; but I’m a nurse so my mind probably just went there automatically.
Seth received Tim’s advice to rethink his collection better than I think I would have. Seth Aaron obviously can make clothes quickly, albeit impeccably, and Tim was right: every one of those pieces, while amazing, were predictably “Seth Aaron”. There were jackets and more jackets and beautifully seamed outfits.
I’ve seen a “spoiler preview” of all the collections shown at Bryant Park and Seth Aaron’s collection does have some surprising pieces. Although the collection couldn’t have come from anyone else, it isn’t the same old stuff we’ve seen. Pictures are tough to judge from but some of these are going to catch the judges’ eye and I hope they will impress them enough to win. The pieces are wonderful and some will really impress many people. He deserves to win in my opinion; I’ve been rooting for him for weeks.
Tim’s visit to Emilio was a contrast of warmth and coldness. I thought Emilio’s family was nice. But seeing Tim so harshly critique Emilio’s collection was almost uncomfortable. I loved Emilio’s bright colors – although having his initials hidden in the fabric was a bit much – but I didn’t understand why the pieces were so plain. The one golden blouse looked sheer. Tim told Emilio the collection didn’t seem worth his time. So harsh! But, yet, the word that went through my head was “booooooring”.
Having said that, I wouldn’t have missed seeing Tim on the trampoline for anything. That was just too fantastic!
