Previously on RuPaul's Drag Race the nine remaining queens took part in a day of game show related challenges. Raven won the chance to call home after a, "Price is Right-inspired" challenge and for the main challenge, the queens were told to trot out their best celebrity impersonations for a round of the "Match Game." Pandora and Tatianna were a hit as Carol Channing and Britney Spears respectively and Tatianna won the challenge. Conversely, Morgan and Sonique were not as impressive with their takes on Pink and Lady GaGa and were left to lip sync for their lives in the bottom two. After a fierce performance, Morgan was declared safe and Sonique was sent home.
Only eight queens remain and after Sonique's elimination, Morgan is sad to see her go because they had become friends while Tatianna takes great joy in wiping Sonique's goodbye message from the mirror. Speaking on Tatianna's victory in the previous challenge, Jessica says the others underestimate her, but she, Tatianna, just proved them wrong.
A She-Mail arrives and in this one, RuPaul makes a bunch of remarks about commitment and even cake. Then he appears to give the queens their next mini-challenge. A white box is placed before each queen and RuPaul tells them they must decorate their boxes with some wrapping paper that has been provided for them, bits of their drag wardrobe, and at least one item borrowed from another queen. The queens have 30 minutes to complete the challenge and and Ru will decide on the prettiest box.
The girls scramble to get ready and we see Raven borrow a little bird and nest from Jujubee. Speaking of Jujubee, she wants to make her box gold and uses some gold wrapping paper, though Tyra, also using gold, thinks Jujubee is copying her.
After the 30 minutes, the queens present their boxes to Ru starting with Tyra. She has left her box simple and pretty in gold without much embellishment save for a card saying, "To Ru, from America's Sweetheart." Sahara wrapped her box in a snake-skin pattern paper, pink ribbons, and a big shoe sitting on top. Morgan's box is extremely busy with a bunch of dots and bows and puffballs and accessories and even a male doll.
Raven presents a dark box covered in black paper with a little bit of white trim and Jujubee's bird and nest on top. Raven, using bird images? Who could've come up with that one? Pandora's box is sort of a red-giraffe print with blue and black ribbons while Jessica's box has hearts and a picture of her mom. Jujubee's box is simple and elegant, wrapped in gold with a lovely tasseled accessory hanging from a bunched up tulle bow. Tatianna's box is also very busy with a lot of blue and big chunky bows and jewels.
After inspecting the boxes, Ru chooses Raven as the winner, making this Raven's third mini-challenge win. Ru then instructs the queens to open their boxes. After saying she had them decorate their boxes with something old, something new, and something borrowed the queens discover little blue invitations to their own weddings in each of their boxes. Yup, the main challenge involves each queen putting on their own weddings and posing as their own brides and grooms. The girls are good at putting together fabulous dresses, but how can they do putting together some guy drag?
Anyways, a rack of dresses is wheeled out and as the winner of the mini-challenge, Raven gets to select her own dress first and in what order the other queens pick their dresses. Raven takes her dress and Jujubee is certain she'll be selected first because she let Raven borrow her bird for the challenge, but Raven picks her friend Morgan instead, much to Jujubee's chagrin. The order then goes as follows: Jujubee, Sahara Davenport, Jessica Wild, Tyra Sanchez, Pandora Boxx, and Tatianna. Tatianna tells us that she knew she would be last because Raven is jealous of anyone that has talent. Hey Tatianna, you're the weakest queen there and besides, if it weren't you that was picked last it would've been someone else so get over yourself.
Before Ru leaves, he directs the queens to a pile of fabrics and other accessories needed for spicing up their looks and the queens go on a mad dash. Tyra rushes up front and then tries to buy herself time by yanking the dress rack behind her and in the way of the oncoming queens. In response, Tatianna pushes the dress rack over.
The queens get started on their dresses and Jujubee is still steaming over the fact that Raven didn't pick her first for the dress selection and insists there are no hard feelings. Although, she does it in that way that says, "I'm saying there's no hard feelings, but I'm showing you that I'm not entirely telling the truth." You know, when a person dwells on something and tries to say things are fine, but they say it with a bit of attitude? Anyways, Jujubee is sick of the fact that Morgan and Raven, friends since long before appearing on the show, keep picking each other first on these challenges and I feel like we have another queen who needs to get over themself, namely Jujubee.
Later on, Ru walks in with top makeup artist Mathu Anderson to give the queens some makeup consultations. Armed with photos of the queens in their past ensembles, Mathu starts with Tyra and says he doesn't have much to add, though he does wish Tyra's makeup looked moister. Yeah, I don't understand either. Mathu feels Morgan's makeup/look needs to be finessed and Pandora needs to go from just being cute to being truly beautiful. Jessica needs to rethink how she highlights her jaw and blends her makeup while Sahara needs to look more youthful. Tatianna's makeup is all over the place while Jujubee should try to look more 'natural.' Mathu suggests Raven's makeup could use a little more color and warmth.
Eventually, the girls get dressed up as men for the groom porton of their wedding photos and some aren't really sure how masculine they can be. Tyra decides to draw on some facial hair and notices that a lot of the other girls are also putting on facial hair, assuming they stole that idea from Tyra. Yes Tyra because men didn't have facial hair until you came along. We now have our third queen who needs to get over themself. Is this the, "Get Over Yourself," episode? Do we need to get some Eden's Crush up in here?
Morgan is the first to get her picture taken as a groom and she goes for a very punk rock kind of look, but looks totally Adam Lambert. Tyra is very poised in her photo shoot, but not very energetic and admits to feeling more confident when she's in drag. Sahara's groom is a navy man, Jessica looks very lovely, Raven is composed like a mannequin, and Tatianna is still very flamboyant. Pandora looks awkward as a policeman and Jujubee looks boyish, but not terribly masculine. The day's theme inspires talks of marriage and though Raven is steadfast against getting married, Morgan would love to get married someday. My thoughts: give the gays marriage rights. It's not going to effect you or anyone else, especially since half of all straight marriages end in divorce and those divorces often end up in the news without us gays anyway.
As this conversation is going on, it keeps getting interrupted by Tyra, who is listening to music and singing very loudly and incessantly. The girls grow really tired of this obnoxious diva display and Tatianna goes to confront her. We don't see the actual exchange, but both Tatianna and Tyra say it got a bit heated and so Tyra does not choose to tone down her singing.
The next day, Tatianna tells us that Tyra is a bitch and everyone is sick of her. At the makeup mirror, Pandora, Jujubee, and Tatianna discuss Tyra's attitude and basically say she's a bitch and they want her to go home. Tyra tells us that you shouldn't talk about someone behind their back while they're still in the room, acting as if they're not even there. Raven and Morgan think Sahara could end up in the bottom two though Morgan thinks Sahara could be helping herself by using her dance training and taking the runway en pointe in ballet slippers.
On the runway, Mathu Anderson and legendary singer Martha Wash join the panel as guest judges. Sahara is the first to hit the runway and lightly tip-toes across the stage in a tutu-esque gown. Although, the top and the tutu look like they could be from two different outfits which is not a good thing. Morgan takes the runway in a big bubble skirt with a train and Tyra wows the judges with her elegant short gown and presentation. Raven shows some sweetness and life when she dashes out onto the runway, wearing a bunched up dress with little blue bows in various points, acting as a giddy bride-to-be.
Jessica looks lovely in a fitted bodice and short skirt with big train. There's also a big shoulder veil which could serve as a distraction. I don't know about that. Tatianna's dress is poorly done, look plain and chunky with a big slit up the front that dares to show what's really underneath that gown if you know what I mean. Pandora has layers of organza, but she still seems like a Plain Jane type and I would say a tad matronly. Jujubee's gown is shoulderless with a bustle and a train, looking all mermaid and stuff.
The queens are brought onto the runway and are not seperated into a top or bottom group. Jujubee's wedding photo is posted and though the judges like the way she looks, they don't think her bride and groom show a lot of chemistry. Jessica's picture is very sweet and her dress gets good marks except for the big shoulder accessory. Pandora uses humor once again to sell her photo and Merle is bowled over for her gown. Tyra's picture is very dramatic and the judges rave over her runway presentation.
Tatianna makes for a pretty boy in her photo, but her runway style continues to take a beating from the judges. Sahara's photo is very romantic and Sahara says she always dreamed of a fairytale wedding based off of, "Swan Lake." Martha loved her presentation, but no one likes her outfit. Raven's photo is adorable and her outfit draws some good critiques. Morgan's photo is neither here-nor-there and her gown is picked apart.
Before the queens leave the runway, Ru asks the girls to tell the judges if they are missing something that's going on behind the scenes. I'm wondering who sent the word that something was going on because judges on these shows don't usually ask such pointed questions unless they know something happened. If you watch America's Next Top Model, think back to Cycle Five when Tyra Banks talked to the girls about having vices after Lisa's drinking became a problem. Or, you might remember Cycle Eight when Tyra confronted the girls after negative feelings toward Renee boiled over. Back to this show, Tatianna pipes up that Tyra Sanchez is a total bitch offstage and an argument ensues with Tatianna/Jujubee/Pandora against Tyra.
Now it's time for the judges to deliberate. Santino is a fan of Jujubee and her style while Merle felt there was too much going on with her dress. Jessica's dress worked within her own style, but Santino doesn't like it. Pandora's dress didn't do a thing for her while Tyra blew the judges away. The confrontation amongst the girls and her attitude is brought up and obviously not for good reasons. Ru states matter-of-factly that Tatianna would be in the bottom two if she hadn't earned immunity and Sahara's outfit wasn't 'drag' enough. Raven's outfit was a delight and Morgan's outfit just didn't work this week.
Decisions have been made and it's time to bring back the queens. Ru warns the queens that she will not tolerate problems amongst the girls before telling Jujubee and Jessica that they are safe. Tyra, who is certain she's in danger, is named the winner, becoming the first queen to win more than one main challenge, but not before her attitude is addressed by RuPaul. Tatianna is safe and lucky to have immunity while Sahara is placed in the bottom two. Pandora is safe, as is Raven, meaning Morgan is put into the bottom two for the second week in a row.
Morgan and Sahara are up for elimination, both for their second time, and the song for their last chance lip sync battle is Martha Wash's, "Carry On." A fierce battle ensues as Morgan remains sharp as ever while Sahara shows power in her dancing and emoting. I'm wondering if Sahara can really beat Morgan, whom I'd always assumed was a frontrunner in this competition, but I notice that the show focuses more on Sahara during the lip sync battle and on this show, that's a tell to hint at who stays. Indeed, RuPaul tells Sahara that she's safe and Morgan is eliminated. I'm very much surprised, but looking back on the declining quality of her performances since her victory in week one, I guess it shouldn't be too much of a shock.
Coming up on RuPaul's Drag Race:
The girls take on a rock-and-roll challenge and are asked to sing live for the first time in the show's history with Terri Nunn and Henry Rollins serving as guest judges.
See ya there!
