Showbiz Moms and Dads News
April 24, 2004
Have you caught Showbiz Moms and Dads on Bravo? Bravo describes the RTV show as a "seven-part series (that) shines the spotlight on real-life stage moms and dads and their wannabe child stars as they make their way along the unpredictable road to fame. The unblinking camera follows hopeful child actors as they strive for careers in commercials, on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood." The show is getting some buzz. One of the Moms says the show "ripped us apart" and critics are calling it"riveting and fascinating."
This weeks edition of The New Yorker includes a review of the new Bravo series. The review says "when it comes to the way parents treat their children, judgments are impossible to avoid." Those judgements were not well received by at least one of the mothers involved in the show. Pageant Mom Debbie Tye is quoted in the St. Petersburg Times as saying "We were specifically told this would be a positive look at pageantry. And I can almost guarantee that every family went into this thinking that their kids would get work and be shown to be hardworking. They completely portrayed me as a pushy pageant mother." She says, "They've really ripped us apart." The New Yorker says of Tye's daughter Emily, "One feels that Emily is, at the very least, being robbed of her childhood, and even of her essential femaleness, which is repeatedly buried under a pile of fluffy feminine trappings."
Bravo is repeating episode two tomorrow at 11:30 am e/p and episode three will air in the show's regular slot Tuesday night at 9 e/p.
