So You Think You Can Dance:
The Top 18
Recap by Jacob D
June 18, 2008
On last week's episode of So You Think You Can Dance, the Top 20 finalists were paired up for the first time to perform their first routines. Some couples, like Kherington & Twitch a.k.a. "Twitchington," and Joshua & Katee made a splash while others did not. On the first results night of the season Kourtni L. & Matt, Rayven & Jamie, and Jessica & Will came up as the bottom three couples. In the end, the judges decided to let Rayven & Jamie go. 18 dancers remain and tonight they will dance again. Who will give a stunning performance worthy of advancing further into the competition and who will fall short? Let's find out.
Our first couple to perform this week is Chelsea T. & Thayne. As Cat informs us, the couples have had two weeks to get to know each other and so before they perform, we will learn what they like and don't like about each other. Thayne likes that Chelsea is so positive and Chelsea likes that Thayne is always in a good mood. What Thayne doesn't like is that Chelsea always falls asleep before practice and Chelsea doesn't like how superstitious Thayne has turned out to be. They loved the reaction they got from last week's routine and hope to keep the momentum going.
This week, they will be dancing a Mandy Moore choreographed jazz number. It will be a character driven piece about a king and his forbidden love and Chelsea and Thayne love their characters. Thayne is constantly knocking on wood during practice which draws quizzical stares from all involved. Chelsea, without knocking on wood, knows they will be great. Onstage, they are dancing to, "Untouched," by The Veronicas. There's some nice dancing here, but I'm not really feeling the story. Thayne doesn't seem like a king and this love doesn't seem very forbidden. There's no sense of danger or espionage, like trying to stay hidden, or anything in the dance and it's kind of a letdown. There's not even a sense of throwing caution to the wind and letting everyone know that, forbidden or not, they don't care. A big step down from last week.
Mia Michaels, our guest judge this week, likes the concept, but doesn't think it was executed at all. Mary felt it didn't work and there wasn't any impact. She doesn't believe the chemistry and says Chelsea looked uncomfortable in the high heels while Thayne didn't show any energy towards Chelsea. Nigel says he didn't believe it and hates the costumes they're wearing, though he does acknowledge that that isn't their fault.
Our second couple tonight is Chelsie H. and Mark. Mark likes the smell of Chelsie's hair and Chelsie loves Mark's quirky personality. Chelsie says that her outgoing personality could get on Mark's nerves sometimes and Mark says Chelsie is like a little sister where he just wants to tell her to buzz off sometimes. Mark says it was crazy working with Chelsie's huge dress in last week's routine and Chelsie points out that they missed one of their lifts, though I never noticed.
