Survivor: The Redemption Island Twist – How It Works And Points To Ponder Yell At Your TV Commentary by RTVC Senior Staff Writer Kathleen February 10, 2011
Survivor 22 is being called Survivor: Redemption Island. Redemption Island has the potential to be a pretty good twist and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
Meantime, I am going to ponder the possibilities.
One of the good things about it is the opportunity for more challenges/contests for us to watch which, by extension, means less mindless interview time with the castaways. Hooray!
Here’s what we know.
The episode will progress normally until the eviction at Tribal Council. The person voted off the Island will not go off into the night, to the loser's lodge, but instead will go to Redemption Island.
This is not the original Exile Island where the cast off had nothing except the will to live and a chance at finding a clue to Hidden Immunity. Nope. This will be living conditions at the same level as at the main camps except that the castaway will be alone.
I’m writing this ahead of the first episode so I have questions.
In the normal Survivor world there are two camps. Talent and work ethic tend to make them uneven in quality fairly soon. Reward challenges up the ante on that.
So, what do the promoters mean by “the same”? Will the castoff have a machete and water bucket and all the trees he/she can chop? Will he/she have flint? Don’t know yet.
Just because I’m kind of mean, I’m hoping for a pot and a machete and perhaps a flint. No pre-built shelters or boxes of food.
Granted this is only one person stuck out there but it is supposed to be a punishment not a reward. We shall see.
One thing I have learned with a little sleuthing is that the Redemption Island season is still in Nicaragua. That is very interesting. The rainy season should be over by now but was it over when they started filming?
During season 21 the seas were too rough for open water swimming competitions and they mostly brought people in and out by helicopter. How are they going to do this island hopping thing?
Watch the weather. The rainy season tends to start and stop very suddenly in Central America. According to my sources there the rains generally stop about the first of December and it’s suddenly Summer. This year the rains lingered for a few more weeks.
I’m discussing the weather only because the rain and the flash flooding were such a huge part of the experience for the survivors of season 21. If production stayed in place, the weather patterns should follow a progression. Will this season have been filmed in the mud or the roasting heat? Or both?
