Survivor Gabon: A Tribe Divided Can Not Survive
Rankings by Logan Huffman
As of October 25, 2008
This week on ‘Survivor Gabon’, Fang worried about running out of food, while Kota became irritated with the amount of food that Dan was eating. Meanwhile, Matty struck a deal with Ace, with each of them respectively bringing Kenny and Sugar into the alliance in order to make the merge. And after informing Sugar that the others had dug through her bag and discovered she had the Idol, Sugar gave the Idol to Ace for safekeeping.

At the Reward Challenge, Crystal broke into tears after Fang lost yet another challenge, and Kota earned a tray of pastries and coffee with their win.

Back at camp, Kelly and Ace discussed that they thought Crystal’s crying was a sign of weakness, similar to what GC did. Crystal confronted them, arguing that her tears were only out of frustration, and not weakness.

At the Immunity Challenge, Kelly and Sugar got Fang off to a strong lead, but Kelly quickly dragged her tribe down, and Fang lost ground. Matty and Kenny made up for lost time, but when Ace took control of assembling the flag, he struggled, and Kota pulled out another win.

Back at Fang, Matty wanted to vote for Sugar in order to take the Idol out of play, but having the Idol, Ace convinced him otherwise, and they agreed to vote out Kelly. But Crystal had other plans, and tried to convince the others to vote out Ace.

At Tribal Council, Kelly unleashed on Crystal and threw Ace under the bus, and he denied the conversation that he had with Kelly about Crystal being weak. Crystal flipped Kelly off as she led the unanimous vote that resulted in Kelly being voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Marcus Lehman (28)
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 1
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Occupation: Doctor

Marcus ranks in first place yet again this week. He has a strong alliance and hasn’t really made any gaming mistakes. I know that his name was mentioned as a possible vote-off in next week’s previews, but I’m pretty sure that was just the editors trying to trip us out. And, we all know that Charlie will not allow Marcus to be voted out. At least not on his watch.

Charlie Herschel (29)
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 2
Hometown: New York, New York
Occupation: Lawyer

Charlie remains in second place this week. He is still in a great position, and his closest ally is arguably the physically strongest player in the game. I can’t imagine Charlie not making it much further into the game.

Corinne Kaplan (29)
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 3
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Pharmaceutical Sales

Corinne ranks in third place this week. I’m still banking on Corinne being the dark horse, and I truly think that she is a great game player with a dark side just waiting to come out. She is in a good position at the moment, and I think we will see her true gamer side come out after the merge.

Matty Whitmore (29)
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 5
Hometown: Pacific Palisades, California
Occupation: Personal Trainer

Matty moves up one position to fourth place this week. As Matty said, he has been in bad positions thus far in the game. However, he does try to play the game to the best of his ability in the situation that he is in. I think he is doing alright, and his new alliance should hold him over until the merge, where he will have many more options. Matty’s future in the game could go either way.

Ken Hoang (22)
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 7
Hometown: Westminster, California
Occupation: Professional Gamer

Ken moves up two positions to fifth place this week. Although he isn’t the most physical competitor, he did perform very well in the Immunity Challenge. He does have an ally in Matty, and if he can hold on to that bond throughout the merge, he could go far into the game.

Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (29)
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 13
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York
Occupation: Pin-Up Model

Sugar moves up seven positions into sixth place this week. Although it wasn’t smart for Sugar to give Ace the Idol (whether it was just for safekeeping or not), she did take it back before Tribal Council, which was the important thing. As long as she stays smart in her bond with Ace and holds on to her Idol until the right time, she could have a long run in the game.

Robert "Bob" Crowley (58)
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 4
Hometown: Portland, Maine
Occupation: Physics Teacher

Bob drops to seventh place this week. Although he is well-liked by his tribe and performs decently in challenges, he isn’t exactly in tight with anyone. The old Fang members are still loosely together, and Charlie, Corinne, and Marcus are tight, leaving Bob on the outside. Although he is a fringe member of the Kota alliance, his outsider status could spell trouble for him.

Ace Gordon (27)
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 11
Hometown: Naples, Florida
Occupation: Jewelry Sales

Ace moves up three positions this week. Although he isn’t exactly the most popular person in the game, he is a physical asset, and he seems to be able to make pacts when he needs to. If he holds tight to his alliance with Matty, he could have a good run in the game, since I think he will dominate in the individual Immunity Challenges if he makes it to the merge.

Randy Bailey (49)
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 12
Hometown: Eagle Rock, Missouri
Occupation: Wedding Videographer

Randy moves up three positions this week, but still ranks low for the Kota tribe. Randy’s personality seems to rub many of the others the wrong way. He is trying to lay low on the Kota tribe, which is working for now, but once the merge occurs, his future in the game could be short.

Susie Smith (47)
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: 9
Hometown: Charles City, Iowa
Occupation: Hairdresser

Susie is at a very interesting crossroad in the game. She has almost made the merge, and at that point, her lack of strength will no longer be an issue for her. However, we know that she has to survive at least one more vote. Not knowing when the merge will be, Susie could be in danger, just because she is the physically weakest member of her tribe. However, if she can work to convince the others to oust one of the stronger members while they have the chance, she could end up having a nice run in the game.

Dan Kay (32)
Current Ranking: 11         Previous Ranking: 8
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Occupation: Lawyer

Dan ranks in last place for the Kota tribe this week. His extra consumption of food really seems to be a touchy issue with his tribe, and I think it has enlarged the target he already had on his back. He hasn’t really been able to make any solid allies in his new tribe, and I think he will most likely be the person Kota votes off next.

Crystal Cox (29)
Current Ranking: 12         Previous Ranking: 6
Hometown: Durham, North Carolina
Occupation: Former Olympic Athlete

Crystal falls to last place this week. As Kelly and Ace said, she is becoming the next GC. I understand that she is frustrated, but her attitude is pretty poor. The other four people in her tribe are in an alliance, which doesn’t seem to bode well for her. If she can’t flip some of the castaways to her side, her time in Gabon is about to come to an end.

Kelly Czarnecki (22)
Hometown: Buffalo Grove, Illinois
Occupation: Retail Sales

5th Boot

I’m actually surprised that Kelly even made it this far. She didn’t play the social aspect of the game very well, and immediately isolated herself from Kota. Her only saving grace was the tribal switch, and if she had committed to that alliance, she could have taken that far into the game. However, I don’t think Kelly really knew how to play the game, and her outspoken nature finally cost her, as she became the sixth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Danny "GC" Brown (26)
Hometown: Portland, Oregon
Occupation: Maintenance Man

5th Boot

I am so glad to see GC gone. His attitude of wanting to quit reminded me of Osten from ‘Survivor Pearl Islands’. I don’t understand why people sign up for the show, and then want to quit after they are out there competing. There has been sixteen seasons before this one, so you would think people would realize by now that they will be starving out in the elements, and it won’t be easy. Fang really tried to make GC successful, but he undermined all of their attempts. Maybe if he had stuck with being the leader, things would have worked out differently, but I doubt it, because he is just too weak and whiny. GC became the fifth castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’ after a unanimous vote.

Jacque Berg (25)
Hometown: Santa Barbara, California

4th Boot

Jacquie was such a strong player, and I don’t think anyone could have seen this coming. I was really looking forward to seeing her strategic side come out later in the game, but the tribal switch completely screwed her over. The rest of her alliance stayed on Kota, and all of her allies were gone. The others had already managed to get Kelly on their side, and Ace was the strongest physical asset, leaving Jacquie as the only target. Jacquie became the fourth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Paloma Soto-Castillo (24)
Hometown: Downey, California

3rd Boot

This is not a shock. I ranked Paloma bottom for the Kota tribe last week, and when they lost, she went home, exactly like I expected. While there are weaker women competing on this season, they were all on the other tribe. Paloma was the weakest on her tribe, and she didn’t really try to do a lot of scheming to change her fate. Paloma did show a lot of spunk at Tribal Council, and I think she would have been interesting to watch progress in the game. Nevertheless, Paloma became the third castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Gillian Larson (61)
Hometown: Temecula, California
Occupation: Retired Nurse

2nd Boot
I really was hoping that Gillian could pull out a decent run like Rudy and Scout did in the past, but with older contestants, they either go early or make it far. In Gillian’s case, it was the former. Also, although she was only trying to help, she spoke up way too often, putting a target on herself, which was already big enough due to her lack of physicality alone. In the end, even Gillian’s positive attitude couldn’t save her, as she became the second castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Michelle Chase (24)
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Music Producer

1st Boot
I thought that Michelle had a chance to be a dark horse, but her attitude squashed that chance rather quickly. Michelle immediately isolated herself from all but one of her tribe mates, which is never a good strategy. Despite her performing better in the challenges, the tribe chose Gillian’s positive spirit over her constant negativity, as Michelle became the first player voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
