Russel takes control
early but can he last?
Its hard to believe, but this is Survivor’s 19th season, and it seems to still be going strong.
This time, 20 castaways are being stranded in Samoa, in the South Pacific. From the opening credits, it looks like a gorgeous island. Dolphins are romping in the ocean, bright blue and white waves are crashing, and storybook waterfalls are falling.
Jeff is standing near the crashing waves, looking a bit older and a bit thinner this season. He describes Samoa as “virtually untouched.”
Next, we see the 20 castaways, arriving on several thin island canoes, the kind with the stabilizer bars off to one side. It looks like they’ve already been divided up, because everyone is sporting purple or yellow buffs.
The survivors haven’t been allowed to speak to each other yet, but of course they’re forming opinions in their minds already. A young, fresh-faced purple guy thinks he has one of the women figured out. She’s older, bigger, and has one of the puffiest mullet’s I’ve ever seen. He says “she’s probably some super outdoors woman who probably won’t set forth as our leader.” The woman of course feels differently, and says people have always gravitated towards her and said “oh my God, this chick rocks, we love her.
A young yellow girl describes one of her tribemates as being “a pit bull, tough as nails, I wouldn’t want to mess with him. The guy, who looks more like a teddy bear than a pit bull, says he plans to mess with everyone to get what he wants. Another woman in yellow says that as an experienced police officer, she doesn’t believe anyone anymore.
The castaways have landed on the island, and are now standing on two squares, one yellow and one purple. Yellow’s tribe name is now Foa Foa, and purple’s is Galu.
Jeff announces that the two tribes now have to make their first decision, and that is to elect a leader for each tribe. Hmm, this never goes well. Jeff passes paper and pens around, and everyone casts their votes based on what little they know about each other.
Monica, a cute young law student from Galu, says being a leader is a death wish. Mick, a cute young lawyer from Foa Foa, says he has leadership qualities, and sounds like he’s ready for the challenge.
Galu’s votes are read first. Nobody knows anyone’s names, so they’re voting by writing down physical descriptions. The mullet lady gets a vote, and announces that her name has been Shambo since 1986. I didn’t quite get why, but it has something to do with her being in the Marines, and something to do with a similarity to Rambo.
The votes are spread around.....
