Survivor Vanuatu
What Was Bubba Thinking?
By Professor Dan
October 15, 2004
When I first saw Survivor last night, I wondered what the heck Bubba was up to. At the Immunity Challenge, before it began, Bubba (now on Yasur) was shown trying to get Chris' attention (on the Lopevi tribe.) I listened to what he was shown saying over and over, and all I heard was the question "Merge?" I was left puzzling what he meant. Was he asking Chris if the Merge was coming? (Like Chris would know.) What was he getting at? And WHY was Ami so royally pissed-off about it? Finally, I figured it out: Bubba wanted to know if Lopevi was going to throw the IC so that they could then vote off one of their two women! That's what he meant when he said he "got his hand caught in the cookie jar".
I frankly wouldn't have given Bubba credit enough for thinking of this.
Actually, ASSUMING that the men's goal is to have as many men in the post-Merge tribe as possible, it would be a brilliant strategy. Throw two straight IC's, and use the men's numerical superiority in Lopevi to oust Twila and Julie. There would be nothing they could do about it. And possibly the Merge would have come by then, and then there would be 6 men against 5 women in the post-Merge tribe. AND, most importantly to Bubba, he and Rory would be safe for two IC's, whereas now Bubba is gone and Rory is hanging on by a thread against a 5-strong united group of women.
I've said before that Ami is smart: she evidently figured out exactly what Bubba was up to (hence her comparison to Michael Jordan telling the other side what the next play would be.) But self-proclaimed Master Strategist Chris evidently had NOT thought of it. He still might, but if he gets Lopevi to try it now, the best they can get is for there to be 5 men and 5 women after the next two ICs. That beats the hell out of 4 men and 7 women, which is what we'll have after the next IC if Rory gets bounced. Interestingly, Ami's best move now is to somehow convince the other Yasur women to throw the next IC, and get rid of Rory. The women would then be sitting pretty with a 7-4 numerical superiority going into the Merge.
