So You Think You Can Dance: The Girl Is A Threat! – Ranking the Top Nine

A threat to the guys?
This week So You Think You Can Dance proved wholeheartedly that America clearly is voting based on popularity and dismissing growth, technical excellence, or amazing routines.
Seriously, Melinda, Cristina, and Robert’s routines, especially Robert’s, were easily in the top five performances of Wednesday night, yet all three were unfairly placed in the bottom three.
Anyone with have an objective brain would have reserved those slots for Billy Bell, Alex Wong, and Ashley Galvan, with Ashley going home.
Ashley is good, yes, but there is uniformity in her two dances, both this week and last week, that lack any kind of brilliance or standing out in any way.
My only rationalization for her being saved from elimination is the Jeanine factor. Ashley is an underdog in the true sense, where no one really knows who she is, but she is likeable enough to vote for.
Cristina, for lack of a nicer word, is boring. Everyone hates Melinda, and Robert is obnoxious.
Seriously Robert, you had my favorite performance of the evening, and you had to screw it up by pretending to vomit on national television. Someone get this kid a stage coach!
Although my senses figured Melinda was a goner, it was ultimately the right choice to send Cristina home. The fact that she performed two solid numbers, according to the judges, and still landed in the bottom three meant that the girl had zero chance of winning.
Mia and Adam would rather have Melinda, a more stage-able contestant, stick around longer. It definitely makes sense. Speaking of Melinda, honestly, why so much hate?
Not since the days of Season Three’s Cedric, who was rightfully despised, have I seen such universal dislike for a contestant.
I happen to think it is because she is a pretty girl who is an actress, and viewers automatically cringe at that because it makes her unconnected with the American audience, and it translates to being a snob. Honestly, this girl has done nothing wrong to warrant such hatred.
From last week to this week, there was a definite improvement, and while her outfit will probably be in the reality television hall of shame for outfits somewhere down the line, it certainly didn’t merit her a trip to the bottom three.
Melinda was outstanding with her emotion, and the subtleties within her dancing really brought the piece alive to me.
As for Robert, obnoxious behavior.....
