So You Think You Can Dance: Wong For The Win! – Ranking The Top Eight Commentary and Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Joseph Braverman July 2, 2010
This was the single best week of So You Think You Can Dance since the finale of Season Four.
I was worried about this show’s future for awhile. Season Five’s cast was a bit underwhelming as a whole, and Season Six had exceptionally low ratings and shocked the public with a new stage that was not very well embraced.
Finally, the show seems to have gotten back to its heyday of greatness. And, I have to say the new format may have done the trick.
I was a skeptic and very critical of the inclusion of the all-stars, but they have been proving themselves helpful to the contestants, and I don’t miss the partnerships as I once did.
The only thing different is that the eliminations are not quite as dramatic as they used to be, but really, at this stage of the game where almost everyone is great, someone good has to go each week.
This week, even I had to give in to the fact that Melinda’s “Salsa” was not muy caliente. It was more like muy frio. Ok, so I did love the rolling around on the floor, and the occasional shakes and shimmies, but I wish the judges would have called out Melinda’s problem with the routine without rehashing the same critiques as before, like the “pigeon toe” comment.
The problem was clearly Melinda, on top of her shaky footwork, was not good at transitioning during her lifts. The lifts brought down the performance as a whole, and even though it was clear Melinda was trying to be sexy and bringing her inner Latin flair to life, those stilted lifts kept taking me out of the moment.
Yes, I had high hopes for Melinda at the beginning of the season, but after this week, it was clear she needed to be eliminated.
However, what is with Pasha this season? I daresay Pasha is becoming the WVP. Worst valuable player!
Every single routine he has partnered with someone, and they have landed in the bottom three. Pasha is a fairly popular contestant, but I can’t help but feel Pasha was a much cooler contestant when he is doing styles outside his genre.
I mean, who could forget his infamous Hip-Hop numbers with Lauren and Lacey? I guess, for some reason, Pasha’s personality is very constrained while dancing Ballroom. I think Dmitri or, even Ryan, would have been a better choice of a male Ballroom dancer.
I just think the audience is used to the goofy, fun loving Pasha who conquered many genres.
As for the MVP of this week, it has to go to Twitch, who finally proved why he is one of the best Hip-Hop contestants in the business.
NappyTabs routine would not have worked half as well without the humor and technique that Twitch infused. Twitch raised the bar for how helpful an all-star could be.
Speaking of this epic routine.....
