So You Think You Can Dance: Can Anyone Conquer Kent? – Ranking the Final Three Commentary and Rankings by RTVC Staff Writer Joseph Braverman August 6, 2010
It was a huge and important week for the final four So You Think You Can Dance contestants.
It was the final impression given to America, who now held all the power in their hands, and they had to determine who was worthy of entering into the finale.
As much as this pains me to say it, I think America made the right choice, kind-of. Yes, I will gladly admit that Adechike was my favorite contestant this year, but it was more because of his personality, conviction, and heart than it was due to his dancing.
I felt like the judges finally were able to make concise critiques about Adechike without resorting to the kind of cruelty that has kept him safe for so many weeks.
It is ironic that America, who has helped Adechike make it so far in the competition when it seemed the judges were all against him, that was the actual nail in his coffin. It’s almost as if they were politely cutting the plug so that Adechike did not have to suffer from the judges any longer.
And I have to say, as hard as it is to see Adechike go home, the American public did him a favor.
How uncomfortable would it have been if Adechike had arrived in the finale only to be met with a barrage of negative comments and criticism flung at him from the entire judging panel?
Not to worry Adechike, you did have some shining moments in the competition, specifically with Comfort, but it was your time to go.
Now, seeing as there are three left, I guess I am going to have to root for one. I must say, as much as I enjoyed the Argentine Tango that Lauren and Pasha produced this week, I was still lacking something from Lauren overall.
In the packages showing us how far she has come, her quest of being miss spirited and “most involved” teen on earth left a conflicting taste in my mouth. On the one hand, I am proud she is a go-getter and accomplished so much in such a short span of living, but on the other hand I find her to be a bit too unrelatable to the masses.
I also have not connected with her pieces on an emotional level as I probably should. Look, there is no denying Lauren is the strongest of all the females in the entire competition this year, but I fear the casting for the girls was not as strong as it was in seasons past. In fact, it was the worst casting for girls in any season.
While Lauren is certainly a strong and hirable dancer, I am not getting that drive that I should to root for her. I haven’t seen her reach an emotional depth that both Kent and Robert reached in the competition, and now it is just too late.
So, I narrow my winner to either Kent or Robert, two very deserving winners in my book. Kent had a rough start and a semi-sloppy middle run, but man he has slain the past few weeks with killer performances and an unprecedented maturity.
Even Kent’s pirouettes.....
