So You Think You Can Dance: Impregnating Aliens, Chained Dancers, and Classic Ballet…Oh My!
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Joseph Braverman
July 2, 2009
What a night it was on So You Think You Can Dance! There were so many standouts this week that it will be difficult for America to decide the bottom three couples, but even though I have mine easily picked out, I think America will most likely not listen to either myself or the judges this week. This means that one couple will fall into the bottom three couples who will most definitely not deserve to be there. Because of the tightness of the competition, every single one of these couples has the capacity to either escape or become embraced by a possible elimination.

Starting out the night was Brandon and Janette, performing a sexy cha-cha. Finally, Janette can ignite her true Miami sexiness in a dance style she is familiar with. I am sure Brandon, who has been excellent so far this season other than poor footwork in the Foxtrot, will master the style as well.

I am sorry for you fans who love watching every little recap that occurs on these types of reality shows, but when Janette and Brandon strolled down memory lane and reminisced about the dances they performed, I immediately fast-forwarded my TiVo. It is not essential to the night’s performances, so I will not be commentating on any dancer’s historical spiels tonight; sorry folks! I commentate strictly on the dance they perform in the present week that we are watching!

In any event, Janette and Brandon kicked the night into high gear when they performed the cha-cha. I must admit, I was a tad worried with the slow beginning, as well as the Pussycat Doll song choice, but then it suddenly kicked into high gear, and it turned into the routine of the entire night for me. Janette’s facial expressions, legs, and overall sexiness drew me into the routine, and I knew Janette was good in ballroom but never in my wildest dreams did I expect her to mix performance and technique so flawlessly. Brandon was entirely in-sync with her, and even though I saw a few stumbles in his footwork, he went through the motions effortlessly. This couple compliments each other so well, and after all is said and done I cannot find any faults with the pair of them, other than I wish Janette would be complimented by the judges a bit more.

I know Brandon is good, thank you Mia for that update, but hey Janette kicks butt too! I will say, it was pretty emotional when Brandon was told from Mia Michaels that the reason she was so tough on him is because he has an unbelievable level of talent, and she wants to bring out the best in him with her critiques. That certainly has to feel good, and thank you Mia for letting Janette know that she has been incredible since day one. Janette, you still don’t get enough praise on this show, and you certainly deserve it!

However, I do disagree with Nigel that this was the best cha-cha in the history of the show. That would have to go to Courtney and Gev’s Season Four Cha-Cha choreographed by the beyond talented Anya and Pasha. Yet overall, I say this is one routine that is deserving of a perfect score. I give Brandon and Janettes’ Cha-Cha a 10/10.

Next up to perform is the newbie couple.....
