So You Think You Can Dance 6: There's A Top Ten But Only One Contender
Commentary and Rankings by Joseph Braverman
November 26, 2009

"One clear winner..."
This week on So You Think You Can Dance, the top ten was formed, and overall I think the judges made the right decision.

Yeah, I can see where Nigel was coming from in adamantly wanting to keep Victor in over Nathan. He wanted to reward hard work and maturity rather than popularity and underachievement.

Still, the two solos really proved that Nathan was the superior dancer. Don’t get me wrong, I want Nathan gone as soon as possible, and even though I contend with Nigel that Victor’s solo was the best he has done all season, there was something so utterly confidant, and dare I say mature, about the way Nathan danced.

Victor danced with just a tad too much desperation than I would have liked, and at the end of the day Nathan’s dancing was justification for him entering the top ten. I am sure the producers would have been doubly upset if Nigel kicked out Nathan since that would have caused a lack of ticket sales made by the tweenies who love Nathan.

Can’t be losing money in this economy! So, alas, Victor was rightfully sent home, although I did admire his slight growth and commitment the past two weeks.

As for Karen’s dismissal, well I cannot say I am sorry to see her go after tonight.

That girl and Channing should form a “cold” girls club. Karen acted so cold throughout the process that she barely said a word, and her solo felt like ice was freezing the fire, and not the other way around where fire melts ice.

I think Karen is a great dancer, but her personality was not all there for this type of competition. I think she was settling in one focus area of her performance and not showing the audience her range and dynamism.

Adam brought up a good point about the rehearsals having everything to do with how you are perceived, and I think Karen’s clinical demeanor really did not come across as exciting or warm to the audience. Karen kind of scares me a bit too.

As for the top ten, other than a few, I am really excited about them, although in all honesty there is only one clear winner as of now, and that is Jakob Bell.

Even though I wasn’t a fan of Billy Bell, I think that maybe season six’s competitive edge would have been improved if he was one the program, competing with Jakob.

As it stands, I am not sure there is anyone who can actually beat him. The one spoiler may be Kathryn, who seems to be turning into the next Jeanine Mason each and every week. This girl may be the only person to put a dent in Jakob’s armor, but I think at this point we may as well close the show because it is near impossible for anyone else to even beat Jakob.

I must say, the rest of the dancers are shaping up very nicely.

I am so proud of Ashleigh in making it to the top ten. Whatever happens from this point forward, I am glad she proved the haters wrong and was able to make it on tour, not just by being partnered with Jakob, but also because she has improved tenfold and seems to be battling it out with Kathryn for the top girl spot in the competition.

I have faith in Ashleigh, as she is easily my favorite dancer of the season, and I hope her fans will continue to support her and send her all the way into this year’s finale.

Well, that is all for my thoughts folks. Now it is time to rank the remaining ten dancers:.
