The Amazing Race 16: Cowboys And Cops Fight For The Lead
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Kathleen

Don't disturb the
Diva moment.
The excitement tonight on the Amazing Race was more than just that humongous bungee jump.

As usual when travel is involved, any big leads established on the last leg were erased by an airplane trip to another country. This time although the teams took a variety of routes from Argentina to Germany, they pretty much all ended up together.

Frustrating for the overly competitive (me) but it makes better TV.

The first big excitement was the foot race to the train to get to Hamburg. How many of us have done that? Sprinted full tilt through an airport or train station only to arrive gasping and sweaty just as the doors shut in front of us. I will bet there was a lot of serious cussing that production didn’t share with us.

The “Intersection” was new. I like it.

As it worked this time, everyone was arriving at the clue box in pairs or bunches anyway, so the pairing up of teams worked smoothly. But, veteran race fans, project this Intersection challenge on some of the races of the past. Hmmm.

What if two teams that LOATHE one another arrive at the same time? Or worse, what if three teams show up together and the fourth team is, oh, miles and miles or hours and hours behind. The short straw team will have to sit on the curb and wait for someone to join them. I predict future excitement if they keep the Intersection in the tool drawer.

Excitement during a bungee jump is when the cowboy hat stays on!

Now I know that our Boys don’t have ordinary off the rack hats. With what they do in real life, those are custom hats. And if you watch a rodeo, those hats tend to stay on even when the cowboy is riding something ferocious. But really! To stay on through a bungee jump and all the upside down, up and down bouncing? OMG. There must have been glue.

Nice moment on the jump, by the way, when Dan was supportive and protective of Brandy, who was clearly not enjoying the jump. It’s nice that he saves his over-the-top bickering for interactions with his brother.

Excitement, the bad kind, for me was when the city cops picked the better transportation after the bungee jump and my Cowboys were chugging along on the train. Nail biting time.

Last week there was fuss about the Cowboys having an advantage with the ranching challenges. This week I think the city cops had the advantage.

Sauerkraut, beer and an understanding of city transportation. The cops were not nearly as inept as I had believed.

Culture shock for the Cowboys – their first soccer field? Cord’s first beer? And the notation that they were out of the Bible belt. Hysterical. And no excuses. They just keep chugging along like the Energizer Bunny.

I have been wrong.....
