The Amazing Race 16: Look, Up In The Sky, It's Some Sort Of Flying Thing

.-.. --- ... . .-. ...
Tonight on the Amazing Race I am looking forward to some promised excitement.

At least it will be busy with a lot to cram into one hour.

In addition to our normal Detours and/or Roadblocks, which I assume we will have, our favorite BBJJ have earned themselves a Speed Bump and the previews indicate that this is a U-Turn leg. Whew.

I’m not too worried about the Speed Bump even for a cute but cognitively challenged pair like Jeff and Jordan. Over the seasons the Speed Bumps have proven to be just that, not difficult in general, just something that slows down your progress.

As soon as I say that, of course, it will probably turn out that the Bump is tall enough to rip the undercarriage from a Hummer. Sigh.

What I’m really concerned about is that U-Turn. The turns (or the yield) is really the only opportunity to get ahead in this game by using strategy. If you hit the U-Turn box first then damn the torpedoes, just Turn the guy who is your biggest threat and say thank you for the opportunity to do it.

It doesn’t usually play out that way, of course. There’s always lots of nice guy action where teams don’t want to be perceived as mean or don’t want to piss anyone else off. OK … just remember, nice guys don’t always finish first. Then there is the “let’s get ‘em“ strategy. Some team will Turn or Yield another based strictly on not liking them – here comes the silly part – even if the disliked team is currently running dead last. That one gives me a migraine.

All that said, we really don’t have any disliked teams this year. Not to the point of sabotage, anyway. So, if the U-turn gets used it will probably be for actual strategy and that means that the teams racing well are in danger. I will be chewing my nails for the Cowboys and, amazingly, for Joe and Heidi. I would love to see the Girlfriend Alliance get Turned because the fireworks would be fun. In truth, they are the team most likely to use it on someone else.

And the opening credits are rolling —here we go.

The Pit Stop is a bus! Well, ok. The Phil on the mat part of the pit stop was as normal. A mat in an historic locale where Phil checks in the racers. But then, for the “mandatory 12 hour rest period” they threw the teams on a bus and took them off into the night. The long bus ride concentrated on Joe and Heidi and some serious smack talk on Joe’s part.

Oh, oh. The foreshadowing thing again. This combined with the pile of ice packs on Joe’s knee does not bode well for Joe and Heidi. And I was just starting to appreciate them.

Credit to the Cops who knew or found out that they had been heading south and west from Germany and, therefore, were probably somewhere in France. I can name teams this season who could NOT have figured that out. (Insert your own joke about people who don’t have maps.)

We have the usual language.....
