Top Chef All Stars: The Winners Edit Lied And It Was Just All So Silly

This time the nice
guy finished first.
The Top Chef All-Stars finale tonight was silly. Richard won. That was not silly. The rest was.

They carried on like it was a Red Carpet event. They carried on like it was the Oscars. They carried on like it was a big deal.

It was a big deal only to Richard Blaize who won even though he was afraid he had screwed up again and to Mike Isabella who didn’t win in spite of the fact that he thought he was God’s gift to the culinary world. It’s spelled sore loser, Mike.

Big whoop.

I’m glad Richard won. He is a good chef. He’s hamstrung himself from time to time with his own insecurities. He wants it so very very much that he jitters and that’s not good. This time he squeaked by and saved himself from himself. He seems to be a nice man.

I’m equally glad that Mike didn’t win. He’s a good chef. I just don’t like him as a person, per what they show on TV.

The show has given Mike the winner’s edit since day one. He has won when he shouldn’t have, except that the viewer cannot really taste the food. He has ducked for cover and missed elimination when perhaps he should have gone, except that the viewer cannot really taste the food.

And it’s all for the sake of misdirection and “good TV.”

I think, personally, in the long run that Mike Isabella will be the more successful chef. He designs and cooks good food that people want to eat. He’s willing to work for someone else to do that. This sounds like a recipe for extreme success in the food world. I wish him well.

Also, he can’t be as nauseatingly obnoxious as he appears on TV if he has managed to snag a bride. He is clearly in the throes of honeymoon bliss, so maybe she will mellow him. If it’s the other way around and he teaches her to be a crude rude jerk, I don’t want to know about it.

Richard is a dreamer. I’m glad he won the cash prize. For a dreamer like Richard to run a “burger joint” in order to both be his own boss and feed his family must be a strain. Maybe the cash will fund some room for Richard to stretch and grow.

Will Richard be the commercial success that Mike Isabella will probably be? Probably not. Mike’s path will likely be smooth and steadily uphill. Richard’s will likely be a series of highs and lows as he risks and wins and risks and fails.

That’s just the difference between the two.

I watched last night for the cooking and the way the men handled their brigades. I fast forwarded through the fluff and the gratuitous on the sidewalk interviews. I didn’t even watch the after party with Andy Whatshisname.

Someone tell me, did Richard come through with his off the cuff comment to Mike about sharing the money?

The old saw says that nice guys finish last.

This time the nice guy finished first.
