Finally.
This week on Top Chef, Antonia’s curse was in full effect but it thankfully paid off in the end when Tiffany was finally – yes finally – eliminated from Top Chef.
To remind viewers, Antonia’s curse denotes her as the “Black Hammer,” by where every time someone is partnered with her in a challenge, they end up going home (Jen, Casey, Tiffani, Jaime, Marcel, and now Tiffany.)
Tiffany fought hard, but ultimately her inferior technique and cooking experience caught up with her. Compared to the rest, her conch dish seemed the most amateur, not to mention it was served cold when it was meant to be hot.
I really enjoyed Tiffany in her original season except during the reunion, when she used her fan popularity to voice a cruel opinion that Alex had stolen the pea puree, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary.
I felt like this season we never saw her once shine in cooking, and it was by luck that she was able to survive all these weeks – one dish was always slightly worse than hers until this week when she was competing with the best of the best.
I have to say, the judge’s editing was a bit shoddy this episode. During the dining experience, it seemed like Blais’ dish was praised almost universally, and Mike’s dish was criticized for many components, yet Mike was the eventual winner of the challenge?!
I definitely did not see that coming. Not that I don’t think Mike deserves it – because his dish looked amazing and complimented the tropical setting, but in all honesty the real brilliance of the challenge came from Blais.
Sweet potato noodles? I kid you not – this genius invented them. In all the cooking shows I have ever watched, in all the episodes of Top Chef I have ever seen, I have never been more impressed with an innovative dish like this. Honest to god, how does one make sweet potato noodles?
It was beyond comprehension, and that alone should certify Richard as the winner this season. It was so unexpected, and impossible not to imagine how it was cooked. It takes a creative talent to come up with such an idea, and an even more talented chef to execute it.
Antonia has been criticized for simplicity yet is the best chef when it comes to catering to the diners. Ultimately, she is the kind of cook who will have a very long career.
Once the experimenting and play with food is over with, you really need to pay attention to the clients. This is how Antonia will continue to have work in the industry, and I love her for her inability to compromise this tried and true cooking philosophy.
Mike Isabella surprises me.....
