Top Chef D.C. Commentary and Scoreboard by Donna Emery

This week on Top Chef, the cheftestants had to make dishes based on familiar idioms, and then had to prepare dishes fit for a baseball stadium.

How many people sit at a baseball game and think, “Mmmmm… time for some raw, grey tuna.”

Not too many.

But Amanda thought it was the right dish to make. And then, she took the advice of the Machiavellian Angelo. Did you WANT to go home? Because you couldn’t have planned it better if you’d tried.

At least this week’s offering from her didn’t have a liquor-based sauce. Hmmm… maybe that was the problem. Maybe the judges have been influenced by those liquored-up sauces and THAT’s why she’s survived so long.

The episode began with the dubious pleasure of seeing Ed in a yellow dress. This caused much amusement among his fellow cheftestants (including Tiffany, whose dress it was) – although he seemed oblivious to their reactions. Angelo was moping about having been in the bottom, last week; he didn’t understand why his fortunes had turned. Kelly was hoping Amanda would soon be sent home. No one seemed very broken up about Alex’s ouster. At least Ed knew he wouldn’t have to guard his future pea puree containers.

Angelo continued to tell us how bummed he was about having had a poor showing in the last challenge. He told us he aspired to be like all the great chefs; in fact, he used to post pictures of his Chef Heros and pray to them. OK, Angelo. Maybe you can get Amanda to loan you some of her spare cooking sherry. Wait; maybe not. She says he’s weird because he reads Tony Robbins. He prays to pictures of chefs and she thinks reading Tony Robbins is weird?

The Quickfire was amusing. Padma first introduced Rick Moonen, who we’ve recently seen on Top Chef Masters, (can you say, “crossover”?) and then goes on to babble a bunch of seemingly related idioms. Padma finally explains the theme of this Quickfire will be “idioms”. Like: the big cheese, bring home the bacon, etc. The winning dish will be on the menu for Schwann’s frozen dinners. Cool prize!

The chefs chose their idiom and went to work creating their dishes. Kevin gets first pick and captures bacon as his main ingredient; Kelly picks grapes. Ed has the easiest ingredient: potatoes. Amanda was pleased to get cheese because she deemed herself the Wizard of Mac and Cheese. Tiffany dodges doing a fish dish, which is probably wise with Rick Moonen as the judge. She decides to do a bean dish and Angelo is very happy to have the fish she avoided.

Ed takes a huge risk and decides to make gnocchi in an hour. Angelo needs someone to pick on because Kenny and Alex are both on, and he goes with the obvious choice: Amanda. But even though he thinks she’s been lucky to get this far, he also calls her a “dark horse” which implies the others should look out for her.

When the chefs present their dishes to Padma and Rick, Ed shows he was able to pull off the gnocchi. Tiffany said she’d wanted to avoid fish, but put some pan-seared cod over her beans. Kevin made bacon three ways; (what? Is he morphing into Kenny, now?) by doing bacon puree, chopped bacon and bacon froth with a poached egg and snap peas. This looks really good but I have to agree with Angelo: I don’t see how this can be made into a frozen meal.

Kelly’s grapes go into a sauce.....
