Top Chef Just Desserts: A Deserving Winner Gets His Just Desserts
Recap and Commentary by Josh Potts
November 18, 2010

In the finale of Top Chef: Just Desserts’ first season, Morgan made an ass out of himself and Yigit became $100,000 richer.

First, let’s get to the part about Morgan being an ass. Here are three direct quotes from Morgan about Zac, who was eliminated last week:

1)“Zac is an annoying little fairy.”

2)“He acted like a bitch and he went home like one.”

3)“If I could punch somebody on this show without getting thrown off, I’d knock his skull right off.”

What a tough guy.

Morgan sprinkled additional idiotic comments throughout the show, but those three will suffice as a representative sampling of his lunacy. Moments like these overshadow more human moments, such as when he is talking to his son on the phone, which is too bad, but it’s his own fault.

I did not want to sit through an hour of this show to find that Morgan won the $100,000 courtesy of Godiva chocolatier and the car.

To kick off the finale, the final three went to the Edison, a fashionable bar in L.A., and found Judge Johnny awaiting them. The four of them chatted over cocktails and desserts. As Yigit noted, the desserts they were enjoying looked pretty amazing for a bar.

When the three chefs who made the intricate desserts came out of the kitchen to meet the four of them, we discovered they were noted pastry chefs Sherry Yard, Elizabeth Falkner, and Claudia Fleming.

Now, in the finale, there was no quickfire challenge. Instead, there was just a Final Challenge, and Sherry, Elizabeth and Claudia were to be the finalists’ sous chefs during the first day of prep.

And what was the Final Challenge? It was to create a progressive four course dessert tasting.

Sherry Yard was Yigit’s sous chef, Claudia Fleming was Morgan’s, and Elizabeth Falkner assisted Danielle.

At one point in the Just Desserts kitchen, while prepping his desserts, Morgan droned on and on about chemicals or some such, and Claudia looked at him like he was from another planet. During the final tasting later on in the show, Claudia made her feelings about Morgan quite clear.

In other news, Sherry and Yigit worked well together, as did Elizabeth and Danielle.

During final prep and service, the three finalists got new sous chefs because the celebrity sous chefs were going to be diners at the final tasting.

The finalists drew names amongst their nine former competitors to determine who would be their new assistants. Yigit drew Tim, who was eliminated in episode two. Morgan drew Heather H. There’s mutual hatred there, so that was nice. And Danielle drew Tania, who was the first to be eliminated.
